Retired software dev. IMO government is a collective enterprise, and should be fully transparent and forcefully managed for all, and for the health of the planet. I used to discuss City of Toronto budget design and support issues (for about a decade...)

Quebec’s election saw one of the most distorted election results in Canadian history: the PQ won 46% of seats with 28% vote, while the CAQ got zero seats with over 500,000 votes. Read our write-up to see how proportional representation fixes this. www.fairvote.ca/06/10/2026/p...

The 2026 line ran off the top of the Niño 3.4 chart, so Climate Reanalyzer had to raise the ceiling from 30°C to 31°C. Ocean temps in the heart of this El Niño are running about 3°C above the early October average and higher than any other year on record for this time of year.

(My actual answer is responsible government for municipalities: stop electing mayors separately and let councils choose among their member who will lead them. The current system lets people have summer side hustles without any obligation or consequence.)

Also, more and more reports are confirming what should have been admitted for years. The Trump administration has business deals ready to go with Putin, once they can bully the Ukrainians into surrendering more of their land and people. This is the real Trump/Kushner win-win.

Looking at strategic planning rather than line by line budgets might be more fruitful. And having an accurate budget, comparable to audited amounts would be helpful. Also, have a look at capital accounts. Toronto hoards cash.

Note that two parts of the budget process presented by Toronto are traditional now: - every year the staff present a dire picture -- fear mongering - every year the staff congratulate themselves on achieving the impossible -- a clear message of 'leave this to us'

As a general comment about the bill C-39 which increases discretion on the part or Canada ministers to suppress labour actions... I've believed for decades that an initiative that would increase the relevance of unions would be to insist that unions have a meaningful seat at the management table.
