Upon reflection a spy reading papers is probably a fair description of at least half a dozen le Carré novels. But they make for pretty dull films imo 😄

I've only read one Fleming and that was a long long time ago. I mostly recall thinking if you renamed the characters and title no-one would be able to say what film "adapted" it.

I could imagine being in a boat generically counting as good reason. You'd want one handy to cut free if you got tangled in ropes etc and (generally) you're not a danger to others. I wonder if attacking another vessel could be charged as some sort of piracy though? Give his legal team a workout...

I don't know that I noticed that 😲! I've also been watching late series Monk recently, and while some of the crimes can be a bit too absurd, it's very funny and great for some comic outlining practice (I.e Can I think of a situation to put Monk in he'd hate and then add a crime around that)

Death Valley is great fun! Shakespeare and Hathaway is also very funny as a similar thing. I actually think whodunnits are great for comedy as it gives a lovely structure to things you can then bounce around. Also adds stakes which helps escalate stuff.

I think WB's argument was it wouldn't get a audience as young people "don't know looney tunes". You mean the generation that loves short form video content have never seen the characters who star in hundreds of short films? They had the biggest yet cheapest marketing content ever!

Paul Hennell @hennell.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
Finally saw this today and it was pretty much everything I wanted it to be. How WB can so mis-manage an IP that's had audiences howling for decades I've no idea.
