I’m seeing a lot of people hang their hopes and all their attention on the midterms. Electoral organizing matters, but full-time spectatorship won’t build the power we need. I wrote about checking in with yourself about where your attention is going and what you’re doing with it.

When you insist loudly that you are not some terrible thing, you're agreeing that the thing is terrible—a problem if the thing is not terrible, but actually is necessary for solving clear pressing problems. Now you can't even talk about real solutions directly. And you're still called a Commie.

Androcentrism in Archaeology

Scandinavia 1880s
In the grave a warrior
with generous grave goods,
shields, an axe, a spear, a sword,
a bow with weighty arrows,
a stallion, a mare,
some game pieces
a strategist then.

1970s
Osteological analysis

are female.

Was she then a lover,
a wife, a sister, cousin, aunt?
Was she laid there in jest,
as a punishment, as an example?
Was she in receipt of inherited wealth?

American Journal of Physical Anthropology

after intensive DNA Analysis
‘The results call for caution against generalizations
regarding social orders in past societies,’
lead researcher, Charlotte Hedenstierna-Jonson

In my heart and mind today

Let her have been a sturdy woman,
scarred, broken-nosed, gap-toothed,
breasts bound for comfort in a fight,
no blonde plaits, no horned helmet,
a great belcher and farter,
a screamer in sex, childbirth and battle,
with thighs to grip a horse rather than a man.

Let the warrior describe the woman.

A lot of media coverage of the ‘AI’ reading of the Herculaneum scrolls really fails to understand what’s happened here. There’s no language processing happening, the AI/ML is not trained on a corpus of texts or language. It can detect ink to see shapes. HUMAN EXPERTS are then transcribing the text.
A screenshot from here: https://www.ox.ac.uk/news/2025-02-07-inside-herculaneum-scroll-seen-first-time-almost-2000-years

It explains that the machine learning involves only the detection of ink

If you or I had installed a water connection without the utility company's knowledge that was not linked to our account, we all know they wouldn't be saying that we have to be partners. Link to article: arstechnica.com/tech-policy/...
An investigation conducted by utility officials in Georgia’s Fayette County found that the Quality Technology Services (QTD) facility had two industrial-scale water hookups that weren’t being monitored. “One water connection had been installed without the utility’s knowledge, and the other was not linked to the company’s account and therefore wasn’t being billed,” Politico reported.

QTS eventually paid about $150,000 for the water, but there were no consequences for exceeding peak limits established by the county during the data center planning process. Frustrating residents, the county declined to fine QTS. Fayette County’s water system director, Vanessa Tigert, told Politico that the decision was partly because the county blamed itself and didn’t want to offend QTS.

“They’re our largest customer, and we have to be partners,” Tigert said. “It’s called customer service.”

Dang, this line from @sarahkendzior.bsky.social is such a tidy framing to describe the “Just let the South rot they’re already lost to us lol” crowd. sarahkendzior.substack.com/p/overriding...
John W.S.: Are we heading into a Civil War?

SK: Not in a North/South sense – and be very wary of anyone who claims that, promotes secession, or tries to get you to abandon The South. There is a cohort of liberal racists content to let marginalized communities suffer without voting rights under the tyranny of the minority and then pretend their goal is to “punish Republicans” when the GOP leadership in Southern states won’t suffer at all. You should support Southern civil rights activists instead
