According to a new NYT investigation, at least 44 governors, 70 US senators, and 185 House members have faced violent threats over the past two years. Their staff and families as well. A key source of this danger is Donald Trump, as I documented earlier this year. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

As the Trump government again targets Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, it's also worth recalling the horrific response from Trump himself when Omar was violently accosted last January—disparaging her as "a fraud" and falsely suggesting the attack was staged. www.motherjones.com/politics/202... 3/x

The symbolism escapes them all: a democratically elected President was murdered at Ford's theater after a race-based civil war. I'm sure they're thinking Trump = Lincoln, but history will see the truth: Trump = Confederacy and attempted subversion of democracy.

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public"

This quote comes from Theodore Roosevelt, written in May 1918 during World War I, in an opinion piece for The Kansas City Star. The essay was titled “Lincoln and Free Speech.”

At that time, the U.S. was in the middle of World War I under President Woodrow Wilson. The country had passed the Espionage Act (1917) and Sedition Act (1918), which made it illegal to criticize the government or the war effort. Many people, including journalists, activists, and even clergy were being silenced or jailed for dissent.

Roosevelt, though himself a former president and a staunch patriot, was deeply concerned by this suppression of free speech. He argued that true patriotism requires the right to criticize one’s leaders, especially in times of crisis. Blind loyalty, he said, was not patriotism but a form of moral treason.

Here’s the full paragraph from Roosevelt’s essay for context:

“The President is merely the most important among a large number of public servants. He should be supported or opposed exactly to the degree which is warranted by his good conduct or bad conduct, his efficiency or inefficiency in rendering loyal, able, and disinterested service to the Nation as a whole. Therefore it is absolutely necessary that there should be full liberty to tell the truth about his acts, and this means that it is exactly as necessary to blame him when he does wrong as to praise him when he does right.

Any other attitude in an American citizen is both base and servile. To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public. Nothing but the truth should be spoken about him or any one else. But it is even more important to tell…

this is a great illustration of one of the fundamental insights of democracy — that there is no such thing as "the people" and that majorities are elusive and ever shifting. no election, no decision, is final and treating an election as a final decision is profoundly undemocratic.
