Hand holding a copy of the book “a scrap of moss and magick” by Helen Parry. The cover shows a girl's head, green hair flowing into woods and plants, a magpie and a smoky cat, in the distance, a country house.

If I ever finish this, I will read it! The stories are quite mad. It's hard to explain them in so few words, maybe I shouldn't have started this... Anyway, in the next book we're off to fight the Roman emperor & his giants...

Book 6: Gawain, Ywain & Marhalt. Much of this book is about Gawain & my what a double-dyed shit he is. Don’t accept his help if you are a knight unable to accept that the lady you adore loathes you! In the end, everyone blames the lady & she dies. Plus assorted knightly adventures. #malory

Confession: I was distracted by newer, flashier books & I left the narrow path of Malory’s Arthur & skipped away gathering primroses. But I have repented. So, onwards!

Thank you to everyone posting about Brian & Wendy Froud's new book, containing 72 new paintings with literary responses by 37 women writers of diverse backgrounds, landscapes & mythic traditions. Having worked on the project for the last two years, we've all been moved by the enthusiastic response.

Why zero (0) lessons have been successfully planned so far today:
My tortoiseshell cat Nala sitting on the papers on my desk & inserting herself between me and my keyboard. You can’t see my other cat Clara comfortably ensconced on my lap and occasionally hissing at Nala. Or farting.

A picture of my book, A Scrap of Moss and Magick, on a beautiful purple background. There is text around it: Out Now. From dazzling debut author Helen Parry. Illustrations by Melissa Castrillón.

Many, many thanks to everyone who has worked on this with me: the extraordinary David Fickling Books who are so committed & passionate about children's books (& especially editor extraordinaire Rosie & marketing genius Fern), to Liz Scott who's worked so hard & cleverly promoting it, & to Melissa Castrillón whose art inside & outside the book is so beautiful & perfect.

And thank you to everyone who has supported it: Philippa Leathley, Gita Ralleigh, Helena Duggan with their kind comments; Jacqui Sydney, Sally Farr & Leonni Lark for their lovely early reviews. On a purple background with beautiful leafy fronds by Melissa Castrillón, a quote@ 'An instant classic. All the warmth of a hot chocolate with delicious darkness sprinkled on top. A must read for fans of Diana Wynne Jones.' Philippa Leathley, author of The Inkbound Series.

Ekphrastic. Bronzino portrait in James’ The Wings of the Dove. “…splendid as she is, one doubts if she was good.”
1540 Bronzino of Lucrezia Panciatichi

James:
The lady in question, at all events, with her slightly Michelangelesque squareness, her eyes of other days, her full lips, her long neck, her recorded jewels, her brocaded and wasted reds, was a very great dead, dead, dead. Milly recognised her exactly in words that had nothing to do with her. "I shall never be better than this."
He smiled for her at the portrait. "Than she? You'd scarce need to be better, for surely that's well enough.
But you are, one feels, as it happens, better; because, splendid as she is, one doubts if she was good."

Hello! I’m reading The Inn at the Foot of Mount Vengeance by Chiara Bullen. A historian travels to the inn to document the adventurers who set forth from there to climb the mountain & maybe kill the dragon. But after one night at the inn, the adventurers turn back. Always. No one has ever succeeded.
Photograph of my hand holding a copy of the very beautiful The Inn at the Foot of Mount Vengeance, by Chiara Bullen. The black cover is decorated with a picture of a traditional white house. Vines climb up the margins, entwined with books and swords. At the top is a mountain peak with a dragon flying around it.
