this might be TOO boring, but I'm a tech manager, and "fancy new software will change everything!" is the oldest marketing-pitch in the book. So is "it's so good it's scaaaaary!". No, I wanna see the ROI, the reliability scores, and a solid integration plan...oh wait, those are all shit? Well then.

Obviously there are many "games to avoid" these days, but this one goes to the top of the list I think

He wrote a great short-story on this theme called "The Zahir"; you can read it free in many places, and I highly recommend it if you're in the mood. (For one thing, if you read it you'll know what the heck I mean when I call something "a zahir", which I need to do fairly often lately...)

JL Borges is going hard for me this Halloween: "I had come to understand many years before that there is nothing on earth that does not contain the seed of a possible Hell; a face, a word, a compass, a cigarette advertisement, are capable of driving a person mad if he is unable to forget them."

Hmm: "ergodic" and "ergotic" are nowhere near the same word definition-wise, but vibes-wise, they match perfectly. Like, "House of Leaves is ergodic literature" and "House of Leaves is ergotic literature" -- both true, in technically-different ways that feel the same. Neat

As soon as "fever dream movies you weren't sure were real" came up, I instantly remembered this one, which I caught on TV as a kid. I was convinced it was a hallucination until many years later: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lord_of... ...but nope, just very very weird. Yay weird!

Thanks so much for this. I recognized quite a few, but no matter -- as soon as you brought up this topic, my brain went WAIT OMG, THAT ONE CURSED THING--! --which I now can't remember the name of and will obsess about all day. It's fever dream halloween time \o/

@coffinesque.bsky.social Strange movies have been assailing me lately -- Have either of us seen this one? I think I actually had it as a fever-dream once...it's got Liquid Satan, which just *sounds* like something I'd come up with...

Unemployment is tough anyway, but with over 20 years in sw eng, the fear/disgust with the industry really gives it extra spikes. I'm pooped & demoralized & don't know if I can be excited about any role I manage to land. uhhh but happy labor day everyone! :P

Ah, one of those moments the ennui comes fully into focus, and you see both a monster and yourself. Each time it happens, the lighting is different; sometimes one of you looks evil, sometimes neither. Thankfully piss is perfectly capable of filling a square hole. It doesn't feel right, but it works

Learned a word I'm really surprised I didn't know yet: Scopophobia. There's a great short read on it over at our beloved #wikipedia - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scopoph... I also love the 1900's French term, *phobie sociale*. Sounds classy, like, I'm too good for all y'all's filthy eyes~

Not that I disagree with the caution expressed here, but "we need to start planning now" feels a bit like saying "hmm, I should take driving-lessons" as you're speeding towards a brick wall...

There's nothing philosophical about these beliefs. It burns me up when people try to claim their bigotry is on the same level as any considered position with some basis in reason. Bigotry of all kinds is just cowardice, selfishness and whining. Not a "belief" or a "position". Just a tantrum.

One potential good coming from the whole AI mess is that it's got people thinking more about thinking. What is it to think, how does it work, why do/should we do it, and how it's done well, versus shittily. So maybe we're ready to differentiate deduction from induction more openly now; that'd be rad
000
Heironymous Bonk @heironymous.bsky.social · 23/08/2026
And on top of all that, the "How" of the AI bubble and financial situation is very much a story of inductive reasoning. @edzitron.com 's ouvre is stuffed with facts about how the industry has leaned totally on repeating what worked before, and ignoring data and facts-about-now.
100
Heironymous Bonk @heironymous.bsky.social · 23/08/2026
Theoryless inference is a form of inductive reasoning, expressed in software design. To deduce is to make theories. To abstract, and to try to understand what's happening. AI is specifically built *not* to do this. ...I think that has a lot of impacts on what it is and is not, can and can't ever do.
100
Heironymous Bonk @heironymous.bsky.social · 23/08/2026
Because it fascinates me: DEductive reasoning is building up theories from (ideally good) facts, a la Poirot. INductive is reasoning that relies on what's happened before happening again; it's what makes you certain, absent all data, that the sun will rise tomorrow.

I came to this article for the excellent point it opens with, then got a different excellent point too, plus a meta-point about inductive reasoning that I can't stop thinking about now. So yeah, this one delivers: pluralistic.net/2026/08/21/w...

We spend so much time thinking about how awful everything is that we forget Trump and The Turds don't get to decide what America is. I bought a birria ramen and tamale in the supermarket parking lot last night and sat on some folding chairs and watched soccer with some random people and had a blast

Short story: ~5k words, a 5-minute read, or 10 if you pause and ponder. Poe claimed the short-story was the ideal narrative form...whyever he did, I find these 5m reads with a movie's worth of stuff in them just delightful :)

It doesn’t matter if it works
Ultimately, whether LLMs "work" as a technology or not doesn't matter. The widespread adoption and deployment should be regarded firstly as a threat to the labor force.
