Ravenna is quite a stunning small city. The mosaic decoration in the city's ancient churches is quite incredible and impossible to do justice to in a mobile phone photo.

Visited the Malatestiana Library, first civic library in the world, in Cesena today. No lights, no candles, hard wooden benches and books chained in their spots. Quite an incredible survivor from the 15th C.

I agree. I paid £14 to visit Ely Cathedral earlier this month, and it was well worth it. These places need so much looking after.

Visited both Norwich & Ely Cathedrals earlier this month. Norwich didn't charge an entry fee, but did suggest £5 for a guided tour. Ely charged a £14 entry and that also included a free guided tour. All these cathedrals are amazing places & their upkeep can't be cheap. It seems fair enough.

I was wondering about that too. I just went to their website to check and you can apply for a residents' pass, which it says will be activated when you go with some proof of residency: tickets.stgilescathedral.org.uk/book/residen...
Screenshot of St Giles proof of residence:
To activate your Resident Pass, please bring a proof of residence to the information-desk as you begin your visit.

The following documents, in physical or digital form, constitute as a proof of address:

Driver's Licence, or other ID featuring your name and postcode.

Piece of mail featuring your name and postcode, from Government, Scottish Council, HMRC, bank, or other institution.

Official Letter confirming proof of residence or confirmation of asylum status.

Matriculation Letter from a Scottish University or College.

We look forward to welcoming you to St Giles' Cathedral.

Preview of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie at the Lyceum last night. It's a hard ask as for most of us, Maggie Smith is the definitive JB, all clipped accent & mannerisms. But the play is different. The costumes & set look fab, the staging very clever. Excellent performances. A bit long though.

Unlike Simon Clarke, I was alive during the 1970s. A combination of low inequality, low crime and aspects of culture made 1976 one of the happiest years on record in the UK. The IMF bailout had zero impact. Lesson for Simon, happiness is not just a function of wealth.

This is maybe a really boring point but I do think Andy Burnham's way of speaking about politics and trade-offs is potentially a seismic shift-change in how British politics operates Totally dependent on his actual actions whether it succeeds, but he is showing it's possible to govern in this way

British Sikh activist released from Delhi jail after nine-year detention
Indian government issued with warning it would be in contempt of court if it failed to release Jagtar Singh Johal The British Sikh activist Jagtar Singh Johal has been released from a Delhi prison after the Indian high court warned the government it would be found in contempt of court if it continued to attempt to keep him in jail despite an 18 September court order releasing him on bail. Johal has been incarcerated for nine years without any full trial. The court order was issued after Johal’s lawyers issued a writ of habeas corpus alleging he was being detained against the express direction of the court. Continue reading...

When Lucy from Compass Books in Dartmouth, Devon, was victim to shoplifting people told her to install CCTV. Instead she put this ancient book thief curse on the wall from the Monastery of San Pedro in Barcelona so book stealers would be consumed by "the flames of hell" with "their members blasted".
A Curse Against Stealers Of Books
For him that
stealth a book from
this place, let it
change into a
serpent in his hand
and rend him.
Let him be struck with
palsy,
& all his members
blasted.
Let him languish in
pain crying aloud for
mercy, & let there be be no surcease to his
agony till he sink to
dissolution.
Let bookworms gnaw
his entrails in token of
the Worm that diets not,
& when at last he
goeth to his final
punishment, let the
flames of
hell consume him
forever & aye.
