We found that the most gendered experience wasn’t work-life balance, the focus of most retention efforts. It was feeling devalued, in formal evaluations, but particularly in everyday interactions. Unlike every other topic, the gender gap in devaluation was larger among more senior faculty.

Have to be clear just how dangerous this is. If it continues, it effectively removes constitutional rights from an entire class of people. Imagine you had to fear that if you criticize the regime, any error on paperwork filled out by your family decades ago could be used to strip your citizenship.

NEW: The Trump admin just cut the time that a refugee has to submit a formal response or an objection to a Notice of Intent to Terminate refugee status from the current period of 30 days to just 10 days. This new rule, issued without the normal notice and comment process, goes into effect tomorrow.

This document is scheduled to be published in the
Federal Register on 2026-10-14 and available online at [links]

DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY
8 CFR Part 214
[CIS No. 2870-26; DHS Docket No. USCIS-2026-0529]
RIN 1615-AD26
Removing Deference to Prior USCIS Determinations of Eligibility
AGENCY: U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, DHS.
ACTION: Notice of proposed rulemaking.
SUMMARY: The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), U.S. Citizenship and
Immigration Services (USCIS), proposes to remove 8 CFR 214.1(c)(5), which generally
provides that USCIS gives deference to a prior approval involving the same facts when
adjudicating a request to extend a petition for an alien’s employment or stay. This change
would better align DHS regulations with the statute, which places the burden of proving
eligibility for all immigration benefits on the petitioner, applicant, or beneficiary;
strengthen adjudicatory review; and support agency priorities to improve the integrity of
the immigration system and better protect the interests of U.S. workers.

Walk today was perfect.
A steep dirt trail in a lush with cedar and
sword fern. The trail crosses a thin creek and in the distance, just beyond the trees, there is blue sky and a rocky beach. A close up of two small white and brown mushrooms amongst twigs, rocks, and browning leaves.
A dirt trail in a thick and lush forest, edged with massive sword ferns. Through the trees, clear blue sky.

Showing up to events where friends or acquaintances have lost a significant amount of weight and feeling isolated because of it. I also spend significant mental energy preparing for the diet/body conversation to take over the event. Sometimes it doesn’t but I have to gird myself for it regardless.

One thing I find endlessly funny about the rise of AI is that it has revealed that there is a large number of people who believe that the reason they wrote essays at school or university is their teachers were desperately waiting for them to provide a definite answer to “Lear: what’s up with him?”

Grad school (MFA). It’s the 1st day, a night class. Poet arrives drunk and drinking not-coffee in travel mug. Prof takes attendance. Calls out “Jon,” over and over. Then “Jon Smith.” We kick the poet. He says, “Here!” Prof looks around, says “Which one?” Poet says, proudly, “They’re both my names.”

I get really annoyed seeing so many people say "Since everyone uses AI to write papers..." or "Referee reports now are just written by AI..." Look: Everything I have written has, for better or worse, been my own writing. Don't project your cynical expectations on my work. Seriously, screw gen-AI.

Capitalism’s greatest lie is that our worth as humans is tied to our ability to make billionaires richer. People aren’t just upset that AI will take their jobs. They are upset that billionaires no longer find them useful enough to deserve to eat. UBI is the only way forward in a just society.

Wake up, babe. The Prime Minister just dropped “hydronym”.
The name Lake Ontario comes from the Wendat word Ontari’io, which, appropriately, means “the lake is beautiful, the lake is big”.

The name is more than 400 years old, predating both the Confederation of Canada and the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America.

We know that America is changing. Their trading relationships, their foreign policies, their national monuments, their hydronyms.

Canadians also know that naming reality means calling it Lake Ontario – then, now and always.

Everyone should know what she did in response to a thousand homes being lost to wildfire in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. She did basic income before the hundreds of new pilot experiments, not because of the evidence, but I think because of her profound sense of empathy.

Well, that was a fucking ride.
A cropped screenshot of an article section titled "Gary Larson cartoon incident" from a Tumblr page. The text describes a controversy involving a Far Side cartoon and Jane Goodall.

_____________

Gary Larson cartoon incident

_____________

In 1987 Gary Larson published a Far Side cartoon of two chimpanzees grooming, in which one discovers a blonde hair and says, "Conducting a little more 'research' with that Jane Goodall tramp?"[127] The Jane Goodall Institute called the cartoon an "atrocity" in a letter drafted by its lawyers to Larson and his syndicate. Goodall, who was in Africa at the time, later found the cartoon amusing.[128]

She went on to name it her favourite depiction of herself in pop culture.[129] Larson offered profits from sales of a shirt featuring the cartoon to the Jane Goodall Institute.[130]

Goodall wrote the preface to The Far Side Gallery 5, detailing her version of the controversy.[131] She praised Larson's creative ideas, which often compare and contrast the behaviour of humans and animals.

In 1988 Larson visited Goodall's research facility in Tanzania.[128] While there, he was attacked by a chimpanzee named Frodo.[127][132]

I used this kind of policy when I received SNAP, but I had ac great deal of privilege as a poor person: summers off (I taught at a university), well-educated, owned a vehicle most of the time. I appreciated the policy but also understood that it didn’t change things materially for most people.

And I am not someone who thinks writing is particularly fun or enjoyable. It’s frustrating and maddening, often grueling. But recognizing when you have finally executed the idea that previously only lived in your head so that others will understand and have that same idea—what joy that is.

Every day I am increasingly convinced that we need UBI immediately. While they are in office, lawmakers should be required to live - actually live, not pretend that it's a home - in the average housing in their district that their family can purchase on UBI.
