More of this, please. Also, I know it's early, he still needs to win this race, blah blah blah... but Ossoff is definitely my personal 2028 Democratic nominee favorite right now. A lot can happen in the next 2 years of course, but this is good stuff.

Engaging in acts of bestiality is no longer disqualifying in order to work for the FBI. um... I'm sure I'm not the first person to make this joke... but I have to. So, they're now literal ratfuckers. I'm sorry.

At the FBI, a history of hiring prostitutes or stealing from employer may no longer be a barrier to being hired
In June, the FBI quietly lowered some of the standards it uses when it conducts background checks on would-be federal agents and other personnel.

Not only is "VP" not likely to be a high ranking position at a place like BofA, but more importantly, this is still a young person murdered in the street. There's no glorious revolution to be had here, and the lunatics celebrating it have no clue and have seemingly lost their humanity.

I cross-referenced my database of candidates against credible voter fraud cases. GOP politicians are implicated at 50x–38,000x the general public's rate. Yet even if every American voted with the integrity of a GOP candidate, it still wouldn't come close to justifying making voting one iota harder.
Bar chart titled "Voter fraud among Republican politicians vastly exceeds the public's. That rate is still just 1 in 850." The chart shows that 0.118% of Republican politicians (17 out of 14,442 DIME candidates from 2016–2026) have been credibly implicated in voter fraud. This rate is represented by a tall red bar that dwarfs the microscopic rates for the general electorate, making the politicians' rate 50x to 38,000x higher than the documented rates for everyone else.

If my country is the country of Jim Crow, it is also the country of Thaddeus Stevens, and it is incumbent upon us to make this the sort of country that embodies the ideals for which Thaddeus Stevens was ostracized after his death

The biggest form of political correctness in America is that basically every single conservative commentator is a gutter bigot and it's just universally understood that it's beyond the pale to ever acknowledge that.

"Obama's presidency was a failure because it led to Trump" is a frustratingly common idea you run into on bluesky and it's dead wrong. By that standard no presidency is ever successful because eventually the other party *will* win again!

on the balance i think partisan gerrymandering is bad but the only way it ends is if democrats weaponize it against republicans everywhere they can. wiping out republican lawmakers in blue states might bring the GOP to the table to end the practice.

My "home river" is the Missouri, and it's obviously a huge and important river, but my current home is definitely more photogenic. Here are some photos I've taken with one of my new "home rivers."

I'm pretty sure other people have observed this, but what I keep thinking in response to those who are trying to compare Ashli Babbitt to Renee Good; the one thing they have in common is that Donald Trump got both of them killed.

The GOT finale was actually fine (I'm still dying on this hill), but for my money, the best show endings have been Star Trek TNG, The Americans, and The Leftovers. Ted Lasso was close, but I guess that no longer counts as a finale.

gonna be so cool when we actively have a horrifically bad drug and organized crime problem in five years under a Democrat because Trump has systematically destroyed our capacity to fight things that need fighting in favor of deporting people and wanton pointless cruelty

My vote in the 2028 Democratic primary will go to the candidate that promises the most aggressive and effective destruction of the Republican Party as it currently exists, specifically via the most ruthless possible prosecution of every member and enabler of the Trump admin.

Yep, Jane's absolutely right. To the "you can't vote your way out of this" folks... we could have done so last November. We could have done so in 2016. We could do so at the state and local levels. There may be a point where that isn't possible anymore, but until then, elections still matter

This is dumb, even by the standards of this administration. Throwing away such a great (and relatively easy!) opportunity to develop a legitimate planetary defense system is deranged. It's amazing how "America First" seems to require giving up on American innovation and leadership.

I have a ton of respect for Hank, but this isn't great. One Senator went to El Salvador to try to save a constituent, another was tackled and cuffed by ICE. A Congresswoman was charged for a fake assault. The NYC comptroller was just thrown around by ICE. These are real risks by significant folks.

The reason the conservative intelligentsia has spent decades pretending that societal shifts in cultural attitudes are the same as state coercion is to justify the use of state coercion against the elements of society they disapprove of.

A tricky thing about modern society is that no one has any idea when they don’t die. Like, the number of lives saved by controlling air pollution in America is probably over 200,000 per year, but the number of people who think their life was saved by controlling air pollution is zero.

Climate change is the biggest “never too late, best time was before, second best is now.” It’s a gradient, not a switch. The more warming, the worse various risks get. Can’t avoid all risk at this point, of course, but can mitigate them substantially (or not). Complacent doomerism wildly misplaced.

I think at least some of this is just individual arrogance. A lot of people attribute their success to their own hard work/intellect/etc., while assuming everyone else is screwing up and/or being screwed by Them. It's like that thing where 70% of drivers believe they're above average in skill.

This may sound fanciful, but it's actually validated by social scientific research. One study showed that, when given accurate descriptions of Republican fiscal policies, a significant chunk of voters simply refused to accept that these were their views. It just sounded too extreme.

Simply put, cutting USAID is gonna kill a lot of people. And I'm seeing comments on the other app basically shrugging and saying "not our problem." The moral rot that leads one to not want to save lives when we can (with relatively little effort or cost) is astounding.

issue with “hire more conservative professors” is that they don’t mean “hire a smart guy who happens to think taxes should be lower”, they mean “hire a movement conservative”, and these days there are multiple litmus tests for being that type of person that are “insist this false thing is true”
