My pal Matt Haughey recut the first season of Apple TV’s Murderbot into a 3.5-hour-long movie. “I did it fast so there are a few jarring cuts, but I now have an entertaining as hell movie with zero interruptions.” [a.wholelottanothing.org]

Murderbot is a *perfect film*
A couple months ago, we sat down on a weekend and decided to binge re-watch the whole debut season of Murderbot and it was really enjoyable. But fast-forwarding through all the recaps and title/credits screens quickly got old, and I wondered what it'd be like to cut all ten

Two and a half years ago when I started writing a book reviewing every NWSL stadium, I hoped to put it all online for free someday. Today is that day. You can read it now here: unofficialnwsl.stadium.guide

Just watched the new Knives Out and I think it's really important you know that the scene in the Seminary's Gym is filmed in the same place Rick Astley filmed the music video for Never Gonna Give You Up. I saw the window tracery and immediately made my friends pause the film so I could tell them.

Additionally, hippos - despite being massive - have almost no fat on them. All of that impressive bulk is muscle. 2% body fat. Compare that to Elephants, which are around 8-10%, or rhinos, which are 10-20%. The average human is around 20-40%, for reference. They're *all* muscle.
A comparison, showing a hippo standing in shallow water, and a see-through model of a hippo with an extremely thin layer of subcutaneous fat and skin over a body that's thick with muscle.

News from Finland. A 9-year-old lost an especially good stick he’d had since he was 2. He hung up 20 posters. A few days later it was returned. It had been found by a 2-year-old, who wanted to keep it for herself, but her mother made her return it. She got toys, flowers and candy as a reward.

a wacky idea i unironically believe is that dead suburban shopping malls should all be turned into small public commuter colleges. most non-anchor stores are a decent size to be a classroom, parking/road access is already there, you even have a food court

How to record ICE: 1) Record from a safe distance. DO NOT INTERVENE. 2) Put the DATE, TIME, & LOCATION on the video. 3) Ask for NAMES & BIRTHDAYS 4) CONTEXT, how many people were taken? What happened? How? 5) If possible, document vehicles used and agents, even if masked. @eltragon.bsky.social

I voted Friday night, dropping my ballot in a box at the county courthouse. They usually count by the next day, but 4d later, still no confirmation of my vote. Maybe there's a backlog, but ballot boxes were torched around Portland so I'm off to the county elections office tomorrow for a new ballot 🤬

A big lesson I've learned in middle age is whenever a friend mentions their dog's age is 12+ and/or their parents are older than 85, never EVER ask them about their dog or folks in the future. Always let them bring the subject up first.

In hindsight, we probably shouldn't have had GenXers building social software 20yrs ago that resulted in today's "doomscrolling" environment. They grew up on nuclear annihilation drills, getting under desks each month to prepare for incoming Soviet missiles.

Sports gambling in the US felt like a minor aspect of sports until it became legal everywhere—then—holy shit, every ad on tv, special bets mentioned by announcers before games, even the new Apple Sports app tells me the betting odds on a women's pro soccer match.

I've always said architecture moves slower than the economy or even societal shifts but I love how the DFW airport has pre-2001 terminals where baggage claim used to be just outside your gate, now walled off.

I use my car's horn maybe once a year to prevent an accident but I wish it made two sounds: a) a gentle toot to egg people in front of me to put down their phones and go at green lights b) a Union Pacific Locomotive blast that loosens tooth fillings to alert someone who's about to t-bone me
