Today is the 40th anniverary of Studio Ghibli's first cinema release! Laputa: Castle in the Sky came out on 2 August 1986, paving the way for everything that followed.

Well, no 'we were robbed' about that one, Argentina were better tactically and wanted it more. England tried to defend a lead for half hour against a team with too much firepower, we just about got away with it against Mexico and Norway but why abandon the initiative like that in a semi?

We've completely abandoned the initiative in this match and have deserved to go behind here.

It's rather hot in York at the moment, so if you're on campus why not cool off in our climate controlled study space on the first floor of the Raymond Burton library? We're keeping it open access all week, no archives or appointments required (and we can vouch for the icy chill) 😎

Damn, can it be that England were actually...exciting in the 2nd half? We need to keep that intensity for the rest of the tournament

A few weeks back I stumbled across the HMV Vault shop in Birmingham, and it was like stepping back in time 20 years. It's one of the last 'original concept' HMV locations, prioritising film and music over merchandise and pop culture. I didn't realise how much I'd missed browsing shops like this
Photo of a fairly industrial looking shop interior with racks of vinyl albums, CDs and merchandise. A sign hangs from the ceiling saying 'Welcome to HMV Vault' with a teal arrow pointing left to the Books, Film & TV, T-Shirts and Technology sections, and a pink arrow pointing right to the CD and Vinyl sections A photo looking across multiple rows of shelving packed with DVDs and Blu-Ray tiles sorted by genre, with the World cinema section in the foreground A photo of long racks of music CDs in the metal section, sorted by artist and with the familiar purple mastheads from HMV's past. Just being able to browse such a wide selection was great, in the days of algorithmically guided and sponsored suggestions you don't really get that thrill of finding something new just because the name or cover art grabs you

Ok, so I have today learned that we could have had a Doctor Who series starring Tom Baker and Mark Hamill with production design by H R Giger, I have no idea what that would have been like but I wish we'd found out 😭

Damn, Studio Ghibli make a kickass beer label
A photo of a hand holding a bottle of beer available in the Valley of Witches in Studio Ghibli Park In Aichi, Japan. The beer label gradients from purple to pink with a green banner saying 'Ghibli Park Valley of Witches BEER' in English above a side profile drawn image of a determined looking young woman holding a sickle in her right hand whilst a magical blue flame dances above the fingers of her outstretched right arm. The woman is wearing a black top with a long purple skirt, her skirt and ginger hair is blowing sideways in the breeze

While it's impossible to improve on perfection, Rowntree's attempted it in 1933 by adding a clear wrapping and a jaunty blue ribbon. Incredibly, this was its last appearance in the catalogues, although some say on dark nights at the Cocoa Works you can still hear the distant rustle of cellophane...

You might think a Rowntree's Easter catalogue could have nothing to do with #Halloween, but that's because you haven't seen the two-sided chocolate twin face egg of 1932. A bargain at 1 shilling.

people complain about One Piece being too long, you wanna see long? look at fuckin British soap operas. And they are all basically fuckin depressing all the time! Just watch One Piece, it's much shorter and much more fun.
a screenshot showing the total episodes for four British soap operas, coronation street, eastenders, emmerdale, and hollyoaks, in order, coronation street has 11,740 episodes, eastenders has 6,821, emmerdale has 9,548, and hollyoaks has 5,987 episodes total. beside each name and episode number is a thumbnail image showing the title of their repsective shows.

I love the design in this film, there's a kind of ramshackle but organic aesthetic which i don't think I've seen anywhere else
The Scrambler, a jeep-like technical with an enclosed cab and gun turret, on a desert track. The chassis of the vehicle has a curved and organic look, kind of like it's been grown from bonePrinciple villain Overdog, a cyborg with massive claws for hands played by Michael Ironside.A view of The Zone, a towering industrial installation framed by a polluted sky and the glow of the setting sun. In the foreground an alien creature sits on a desert wastelandThe rail ship, a ramshackle boat-like rail car with giant tattered sails and mast. The ship is moving along a railway track through a desert landscape and flanked by motorcycle outriders
