Kurt Schwitters : The Merzbau (The Cathedral of Erotic Misery), 1921 Collage Further description in the alt text 👇
Concept of Space:
Schwitters transitioned from the flat surface of collage and painting (Merzbilder) into a habitable, three-dimensional space. He called it "a sculpture in space in which you can enter and go for a walk".

Materials:
It featured geometric planes, grotto-like structures, and embedded mementos or found objects contributed by friends and fellow artists.

Destruction and Reconstructions:
The original Hanover Merzbau was destroyed in an Allied air raid in 1943. A famous physical reconstruction by Peter Bissegger (1981–1983) is permanently housed at the Sprengel Museum Hannover. Later iterations included the Norwegian Merzbau and the final Merz Barn in Elterwater, England.

If you’re still masking… thank you! It might feel lonely but you’re not alone. Many of us are still wearing masks and still trying to break chains of transmission. As the world falls apart…protecting your health and the health of those around you is paramount. It’s resistance and community care.

A few more autumnal shots from my trip to the Westfjords of #Iceland in Sept 2019. #AwesomeFoursome
A small river surrounded by hills and landscape covered in red leaves.A reflection shot of a headland jutting into a fjord, with a layer of fog above the ground - all reflected perfectly below. There is sun on the hillsides in the distance.A winding road heading off into brown hills. The road can just be seen squiggling off in the distance.A fast-flowing river surrounded by autumnal grasses with a big brown pointy mountain above and foggy hills in the distance.

Happy weekend! Here’s a 3,500 year-old Minoan clay flask decorated with a wide-eyed octopus! 🐙❤️ From Palaikastro, Crete. Heraklion Archaeological Museum 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows a frontal view of a clay flask with warm-yellow coloured slip with black hand painted decoration depicting an octopus. The octopus is swimming diagonally with eight writhing, sucker-lined arms covering the surface of the flask. It stares out at the viewer with wide, almost cartoon-like eyes. Additional black painted motifs include sea urchins, tritons, small rocks and seaweed. Minoan decoration depicting sea motifs is known by scholars as the 'Marine Style'. The flask measures 27 cm (about 10.5 inches) in height. It has a short spout at the top with a small loop handle at either side and a small base so that it can stand upright.

“Its shape is somewhat unusual, constructed by slipping together, while still leather hard (clay that is not quite dry), two shallow plates which had been made on a fast spinning potter’s wheel and with highly refined clay. The circular bases of these shallow plates are still visible in the center of both sides of the flask” (Smart History article “Octopus Vase” by Dr Senta German https://smarthistory.org/octopus-vase/)

The flask was excavated in 1903 at a Bronze Age settlement site at Palaikastro. The excavations between 1902 and 1906, were run by R. Bosanquet and R.M. Dawkins from the British School of Athens. The flask is part of the collections at Heraklion Archaeological Museum, Heraklion, Crete.

This being the last hours of #WorldOctopusDay is a great excuse to post this superb Mycenaean stirrup jar with a hallucinogenic-stylized octopus. Somebody clearly ate the mushrooms. 😆 🏺 1200-1100 BCE. Met Museum. 📸 me
A stylized octopus with spiral, hypnotic eyes and flanked by fish covers each side of this stirrup jar, named for the shape of its handles. Mycenaean pottery often reflects Minoan-inspired themes and techniques that originated on the island of Crete. Animated marine motifs adopted from Minoan art began to appear on Mycenaean vessels in about 1500 BCE and were initially rendered in a very naturalistic manner. Here, the symmetrical composition and abstract depiction of the sea creatures are characteristically Mycenaean.

Such jars were commonly used to transport liquids.

Mycenaean, Late Helladic IIIC, ca. 1200-1100 BCE.

H. 10 1/4 in. (26 cm); diameter 8 7/16 in. (21.5 cm)

Max Ernst : Animals of the Night (Some animals are illiterate), 1973, Vence, France 72.5 × 47.5 cm Created late in his career when he was in his 80s for the exhibition of Max Ernst at the Alphonse Chave gallery. Further info in the alt text 👇
The Subconscious and Dream Logic:
The artwork captures Ernst's lifelong fixation with metamorphosis, primal instincts, and the dream state. The layout features hybrid creatures—fusing properties of birds, beasts, and ghostly apparitions—emerging out of a heavily textured darkness.

Masterful Lithography:
The print utilizes highly refined lithographic layering and smooth gradations to create an atmospheric, otherworldly haze where forms materialize directly out of a cosmic subconscious background.

Late-Career Evolution:
While it retains the biting, youthful experimentation of his 1920s Dada and Surrealist periods, Animals of the Night shifts toward a more meditative, cosmic, and mythic framework where dream logic entirely overrides intellect.

Saw Jon Anderson in concert last night. Quite the event, with the *checks notes* 81-year-old singer sounding about as good as when I last saw him perform with Yes in the mid-70s. Not sure how this is possible, but I was convinced by him and the band that Yes music is in very good hands indeed.
