The Bosnian national team is this close to fielding a starting 11 made up entirely of native German speakers.

It was time, but still sad to see Džeko go. Bosnia was lucky that its GOAT was such a class act on and off the pitch.

I still remember in 2009 for WC qualifying, they were beating a pretty solid Bosnia team 5-0 in Zenica. We scored 2 consolation goals in stoppage time and the crowd started chanting "Hoćemo pobjedu!"

There’s the candidate for governor who occupied a similar lane and could plausibly sub in with minimal disruption, but it’d require Platner to step down himself or at least go without kicking and screaming.

Yeah, Platner needs to go.

I don't have it myself, but I suppose part of the answer is to what extent this is or isn't unique to Brazil vs. other South American countries. Colombia is as strong as ever, Argentina is absolutely competitive (albeit w/ a GOAT talent), Uruguay maybe less so.

FTR, I don't think Balogun was trying to injure. But the contact wasn't some random act of God either; it was the foreseeable result of a player wound up and throwing himself into high-risk challenges w/out enough body control. That is a red-cardable offense, esp when one’s leg is trapped & exposed.

My opinion about the Balogun red card is that FIFA should really have retroactively ruled it meant Bosnia won the game.

I’m old enough to remember a few hours ago when all the Americans who started following the sport in June were convinced the refs had been bought off by the big Bosnia lobby 🙃

I still think VAR and the use of technology in the game is a net positive, but having a ball brushing a player's hair count as a deflection is a bit much.

Shame. The first goal was sloppy and the second entirely avoidable as well. But a deserved win by the U.S. all the same.

Starting lineups are out for USA-BiH. Barbarez literally took out everyone shorter than 180 cm (5’11). The average height for this Bosnian starting XI is 189 cm (6’2.5).

Satirical football illustration modeled on the 1914 Sarajevo assassination, with the Austria national team's goalkeeper in the role of Franz Ferdinand, other Austrian footballers surrounding the carriage, and Argentina's Lionel Messi pointing a pistol in the role of the assassin.

Are we really gonna pretend random Twitter racists are household names now? The relevant question is whether the account was obviously identifiable from the tweet/handle and whether Platner doubled down after learning who it was. He deleted it immediately.

Just to be clear about what @jewishinsider.com is doing here: They are smearing Dr. Hamawy with terrorism insinuations because in 1994 he provided humanitarian aid in Bosnia, during the ethnic cleansing of Bosniak Muslims, with a group that, at the time, was praised by the Clinton administration.

What this actually means is he travelled to Bosnia as a medical student in 1994 to provide medical aid with a group that was praised for their humanitarian relief efforts in 1994 by a Presidential envoy of Bill Clinton and was only designated financially linked to terrorists by the US in 2002.

This is an interesting piece on the use and abuse of analytics in English football in its own right, but I also find it amusing that Balkan football culture tends toward the exact opposite problem: “He can pass.” “But can he run?” “We’ll deal with that later.”
