I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

My car was giving me weird alarms today. Only place open on Sunday is Wal-Mart Automotive. They checked everything, reinflated tires, informed me that the dealer installed tires BACKWARDS (hence alarms and deflation) and charged me nothing. Subaru dealership, that's gonna be tough to beat.

LRP: additionally important to know that if you’re allergic to coconut, you’re also allergic to most activated charcoal products. Many of them are made using burned down coconut husks, but no one advertises that/it’s extremely hard to find out. So be careful this Halloween season!

Absolutely true! And it's not like "asexuality" has been a recognized orientation before extremely recently. But I know there has been terrific work done on other queer identities, and I was hoping that there was someone out there working on this.

The return to physical media is a radical act. A book in your hand or a record on the turntable belong to a world beyond subscriptions, licenses, and corporate permission, and they can be lent, inherited, annotated, repaired, and loved. They remain when the platform fails and the servers die.

Question for #historysky #medievalsky not sure who else to tag: Religious celibacy is often talked about in terms of a) theology of spirit/flesh dichotomy b) institutional discipline c) women's economic/social/reproductive emancipation Student interested in context of #asexuality validation. Ideas?

I've known about this project for some years + was privileged to be consulted during its development. Great to see it made public! www.westminster-abbey.org/abbey-news/a...

You were more than a maple. “Spend rhe afternoon. You can’t take it with you.” RIP Annie Dillard
274
Annie Dillard pilgrim at tinker creek:
Thomas Merton wrote, There is always a temptation to diddle around in the contemplative life, making itsy-bitsy statues." There is always an enormous temptation in all of life to diddle around making itsy-bitsy friends and meals and journeys for itsy-bitsy years on end. It is so self-conscious, so apparently moral, simply to step aside from the gaps where the creeks and winds pour down, saying, I never merited this grace, quite rightly, and then to sulk along the rest of your days on the edge of rage. I won't have it. The world is wilder than that in all directions, more dangerous and bitter, more extravagant and bright. We are making hay when we should be making whoopee; we are raising tomatoes when we should be raising Cain, or Lazarus.
Ezekiel excoriates false prophets as those who have "not gone up into the gaps." The gaps are the thing. The gaps are the spirit's one home, the altitudes and latitudes so dazzlingly spare and clean that the spirit can discover itself for the first time like a once-blind man unbound. The gaps are the cliffs in the rock where you cower to see the back parts of God; they are the fissures between mountains and cells the wind lances through, the icy narrowing fiords splitting the cliffs of mystery. Go up into the gaps. If you can find them; they shift and vanish too. Stalk the gaps. Squeak into a gap in the soil, turn, and unlock-more than a maple—a universe.
This is how you spend this afternoon, and tomorrow morning, and tomorrow afternoon. Spend the afternoon. You can't take it with you.

OMG. One of the "Three Annies" (Dillard, Lamott, and Fadiman) whose writing I revere -- among the few authors who make me think not "did I like reading this?" but "how did I deserve to read this?" Annie Dillard did not write much, but every word she wrote was perfection.
