Yesterday we shared the paper. Today I want to share the story behind it. We thought it was all about climate change. Then the models failed. That failure eventually led us to disturbances, and to a very different view of Europe’s flora. Read it @ communities.springernature.com/posts/europe...

AI, Comparative Advantage, and the Next Decade of Ecological Research. Food for thought @jdrakephd.bsky.social doi.org/10.1111/ele.... #ecopubs
For the past two decades, the message to young ecologists has been consistent: learn to code, learn statistics, learn machine learning, learn ‘modelling’ (GIS, differential equations, species distribution modelling, etc.). That message was correct and remains so. But it is incomplete. The researchers who will hold a durable comparative advantage in the decades ahead may be those who invested in the patient, expensive, logistically difficult work of building field programs, maintaining experimental infrastructure and cultivating the expertise required to collect data that no one else can collect.

The girl says about the painting chimpanzee, “aww, that’s cute.” Panel 3: the chimpanzee is alone in his dimly lit studio, head in hands, holding a lit cigarette. He looks completely dejected, feeling misunderstood. There is a pair of glasses, a glass of whisky, crumpled paper, and an unfinished painting laid out on the desk in front of him. The walls and floor space of his studio are covered in his abstract paintings on canvases and paper. There is also a marble sculpture of a banana beside him.
