But there's also a lot of room to improve: the crosswalk at Pendrell/Bidwell (NW corner) is a visibility nightmare. I'm always on high alert around this corner. None of the crosswalks are particularly well-lit. This will become more important with permanent daylight time (latest sunrise after 9am)
Screenshot of Google streetview of the corner of Pendrell and Bidwell as you approach eastbound on Pendrell in a car. The crosswalk is circled to show how poor the visibility is from as little as 50m away. (Note: Photo is taken in full daylight)

I'll use a local example from my neighbourhood: Lord Roberts Elementary. There's some good stuff: Comox is one-way, Cardero is a a pedestrian-only through-way, Pendrell has the world's highest speed bumps, and Bidwell is redirected so drivers can't 'cut' between Denman/Davie/Robson. #VanPoli

Lol this guy went all-in on large-scale development in the early 2000s in Vancouver and wants to be recognized as a 'risk taker'. Give me a break, you're not Steve Jobs. #VanPoli
Comment from Beau Jarvis, CEO of Wesgroup Properties: You nailed it. During a so-called housing crisis in Canada, some of our largest Canadian homebuilders are delivering more housing in the USA than they do in Canada. Why? Because the returns are more commensurate with the risk. Their capital is more welcome in the USA than it is in Canada. We need to shift our mindset in Canada and start celebrating risk takers.

It's truly incredible that the Telegraph, one of the biggest outlets in the UK, published forty (40!!) articles about Arday in the span of 14 days. The media lynched this man; they drove him to suicide for clicks and culture war points.
A composite image of Telegraph search results for articles about Dr. Jason Arday between 28 July and 14 August, totally 40 articles

So first of all, most from Ivory Coast were rejected. Second, you’re inventing a distinction that isn’t relevant. It’s a World Cup: fans from different countries are going to come and participate. Not only is that part of the deal, it was the pitch for why our tax dollars should fund hosting.

Sent my emails to Ministers @josieosborne.bsky.social and @terryyungyvr.bsky.social, as well as Premier @davidebybc.bsky.social. The cruelest voices in our society are also some of the loudest. Gov't needs to hear from the rest of us that we don't want our neighbours to die. #bcpoli #vanpoli
Minister Osborne,

The decision that you announced last week regarding the planned overdose-prevention side at 900 Helmcken is unconscionable. The evidence is in Minister Osborne's statement and yet you ignore it: this is a public health emergency that requires urgent action. Every day that this site is closed will lead to deaths. We cannot kill people to satisfy the unpopular Mayor and his business allies.

I live downtown and have done so for nearly a decade. I wish to be part of your “consultation" regarding the placement of this site. I would gladly have it on my own block to avoid the needless deaths of my neighbours and fellow citizens.

I am already deeply ashamed at the government’s mishandling of safe supply under Premier Eby’s leadership. By capitulating to the loudest and harshest voices among us, you are losing the faith of voters; voters that could continue your mandate at the next election, but are less and less likely to do so with each passing day.

I am ashamed to call myself a Vancouverite and a British Columbian. We cannot welcome the world to our province while being so cruel to each other.

Please direct Vancouver Coastal Health to open the Overdose Prevention Site at 900 Helmcken Street immediately.

Thank you,

206km in May ✅ I’d describe this month as focused and methodical, but it goes beyond just this month: it’s part of this 12 week trend — since the last time I got sick — which I’m really proud of. I can’t remember the last time I put together back-to-back 50km weeks, but I love it #runchat #strava
Monthly distance goal: 206km ran against a goal of 200kmA 12-week trend graph from Strava representing a gradual build from March to May, peaking at 55km weekly mileage

Finally sat down to read Darby #5 and it was worth the wait! One of the things I love about soccer is the vibrant diversity of the culture around the game, and Darby captures that in a uniquely Canadian way (plus this one has a banger cover story from @shireenahmed.bsky.social)

Book #9: Copaganda This book wasn’t really for me, but I thought it was good: concise, chock-full of recent anecdotes, and easy to read. It’s obviously very grounded in the American context, but anyone can take the analytical tools and apply them to their own country and media landscape. #booksky

Book #8: My Son’s Girlfriend I find myself drawn to the short story as a form. The writing tends to be more dense and they naturally leave you unsatisfied; it feels very true-to-life. This collection has some hard-hitters and captures the isolation that we feel at our worst #boosky

I guarantee that there is NO DATA to support this claim. Anyone is welcome to prove me wrong. Anyone who has gone to Europe for the first time as a adult knows it is fucking jarring to see soldiers with rifles just standing around. This does not make people feel safer, it tells them to be afraid.
Demkiw said the measures are a response to an increasingly complex security environment.

Book #7: Everything For Everyone If you, like me, spend time imagining what a more just future might look like, this book is worth reading. It’s a look at our future that doesn’t shy away from the human cost of change but is still alive with the possibility of hope, love, and care for one another.

Yet another example of this from soccer: half of a Jamaican team denied entry to the US for no reason. CONCACAF continues to be complicit in these policies that pre-date Trump and allow the US to undermine the fundamental spirit of international sport. @endofsportpod.bsky.social

Book #6: A Line in the World by Dorthe Nors This is a dense, poetic, first-person account of the people and communities on the Danish coast. I’ve never lived more than two kilometres from the ocean and I saw a reflection — a common thread — of my home in this book. Not a fast read, but worthwhile.

I love sports and I am a big believer in the power of sport. But this is where we see the toxicity of sport and it is truly corrosive. Sporting success cannot be a substitute for national identity, especially when our conception of success is only relative to our southern neighbour.

3. BC history is Black. Before BC formally existed, there were the Victoria Pioneer Rifle Corps (aka "African Rifles"), the first military unit in the region's history. The fact that Black people are taught as a footnote of a footnote in BC history speaks to the pervasive desire for a white Canada.

Book #4 This is a phenomenal piece of historical analysis that draws from the writings of people involved in the making of BC in the 19th century. As a life-long British Colombian, I have a couple of takeaways on the theme of “this is who we are”… 🧵

Book 2 ☑️📚 Jim Shepard’s narrators end up in the worst possible situations — due to their own inadequacies and reasons outside of their control — but rather than being angry, they simply sit in their pain. They are not ‘flashy’, like many (anti-)heroes, but they more closely represent all of us.
