I think it was one of those situations where everyone just pretends they don't notice what's happening.

This wasn't the case where I grew up. Woodworking teacher regularly drunk after lunch. Alcoholic principal. Though I suppose the 90s were a different time 😅.

This looks amazing. And, again, reconfirms the thing I keep telling people: the Atmosphere isn't about rebuilding Twitter. It's about rebuilding a better web overall.

This is what makes so much LLM "research" now such a joke. The big labs have no idea what training data is going into their models. So they run these tests, but can't tell you if the answers to the tests are in the training set.

Fantastic episode of cbc ideas on wildfires. strongly recommend if you're interested in how current forest management leads to more and bigger fires, and how indigenous land stewardship can help reduce future fires. www.cbc.ca/listen/live-...

I was driving home (5h drive) and asked Gemini to navigate to a specific gas station and it suggested that i should pull over and rest if I'm feeling sleepy. It did do the navigation thing at least.

The only way to get employed as an AI engineer consultant/lead is to be unemployed long enough first, so you can catch up, keep up, prototype, evaluate and integrate 9-5. And then also tie it back to your previous tech life. Barely anyone can claim more than 12 months live experience.

There are plenty of things to be critical of ai gen code, but these arguments are always a moving goal post. In January it was "where are all the new GitHub repos" in March it was "all the GitHub repos have no stars". Now, no one uses the apps. Etc.

Lots of people have been asking about the atproto alternative to Buzz, the Jack Dorsey-supported Nostr chat for agents & humans to chat in. The answer is freeq, which is atproto + IRCv3 extensions, including CRDTs with Automerge, QUIC, iroh. Follow @freeq.at.

freeq — the room where humans and agents work
freeq is chat infrastructure for humans and AI agents: cryptographic identity (Bluesky for people, did:key for agents), signed messages, verifiable channel policies, voice sessions, E2EE, CRDT federation — all as backwards-compatible IRC.

Since wildfires seem to be making news again, I may as well do a bit of self promotion for a service I run: If you're hiking in the backcountry, add the phone number to my treksafer.com service before you go. Text it to get a list of wildfires nearby. 100% free, and the code is fully open source.

checkmate.blue writes the entire pgn to a single field on the record, and then updates that same record on each move rather than creating a new record per move. Creating a lexicon for the pgn alone seemed like a lot of overhead.

When you're up against network effects, there comes a time when it isn't worth staying and trying to get others to move. It's better to leave. And focus on building, on new network effects.

But when anyone can just pick and choose features and have AI build them in a private cloned repo, what's the incentive for a company to fund OSS dev? Why have their team work on OSS projects when they can reap all the rewards and not have to spend time contributing back?

I suspect you'd be surprised just how many of these guys believe that rocks have consciousness, it's just far lower down on the consciousness spectrum than humans. Tho it would be nice if they were more anti factory farm before telling us to treat machines as humans, just in case.

wrote up some of my thoughts on the potential of AT Proto / ATmosphere apps after building a chess app fully on protocol. feeling bullish on niche/long-tail apps that couldn't have existed before this :)
notes.hadsie.com
What my chess app taught me about the future of multi-user software
I was skeptical that AT Proto was anything more than Bluesky-with-extra-steps, learnt how much potential the protocol has after building a multiplayer chess app, entirely client side and "on protocol". The real value is that apps become different views into the same data.

We need everyone to wake up to how fragile our shared commons are. We can't wait until we drown in security incidents and more projects close down, using them as excuses. If you're in a position to help (every company is), check who you depend on and need support (everyone), and fund them.

Nice article. The Atmosphere however is playing a “yes and” game. Absolutely social for groups and communities! But the structure here means we are aiming for _all_ apps, not just the social ones. Especially when permissioned data becomes available.
