I’ve made an adapter you can 3d print that lets you mount the 7.09” high-DPI epaper panel into an IKEA Rodalm frame. Still my favorite frame for epaper builds: www.thingiverse.com/thing:7401942

Just for comparison, this is what the same image looked like when displayed on a regular 480x800px 7.3” Spectra6 display. The high DPI version really makes a lot of difference!

I’m playing around with a new spectra6 e-paper panel and this one is FUN. It’s 7” but 1200x1600px - a much higher DPI than the normal spectra panels of this size. On the normal 480x800px panels I can see the rough dither pixelation - I really can’t see that on these.

Don’t know if this concept ever made it to the UK or if this is just a very Dutch thing, but in the NL hundreds of thousands of these books were sold over the years. He coined the term ‘omfietswijn’ - meaning a wine so bang-for-buck you’d cycle to a different supermarket for it.

There’s not? One of the top selling wine books in the netherlands used to be the yearly supermarket-wineguide by Klei which went into much detail about budget wines that were bang for buck.

This bit from the memo is sending me
Since 2018, we have aggressively expanded our studio portfolio while the number of games created each month across the industry now outpaces the last ten years combined. We now find ourselves competing not only with the largest publishers, but also with smaller independent studios. It is neither possible nor desirable to own every great independent studio. We have also learned that we are not the best home for every type of studio; in a typical year, we lost 64 cents for every dollar we invested. As we reset XBOX, we will help independent creators succeed by providing open development tools and audiences to realize their vision.

A user on Reddit shared some deep sleep battery life optimizations with me and I’ve been testing the difference on my E1003s, head to head. The results? When my original config emptied its battery, the optimized one still had 80% charge left. Really impressive!!!
A chart showing the battery level of two E1003 frames. The yellow line, following the original config, goes down from 100% to 0%. In that same timeframe, the blue line which follows the optimized config, goes down from 100% to 80%.

Yeah makes sense! One of the things I’d love to work on with OpenDithering is get the AutoTune working so well across more settings, that you never need to touch them anymore. If that could be built into a standalone frame’s software, it’d be one-click perfect.

Got a blog up for one of my cleanest epaper projects at the moment. I use the @seeedstudio.com reTerminal E1003 epaper device with @esphome.io to make a digital photo frame that looks indistinguishable from a real black and white photo.
An IKEA picture frame that has been modified to hold a Seeed Studio reTerminal E1003 epaper screen. The screen shows an analog black and white photo of a woman standing in front of a white van that is covered in graffiti. This photo was taken in Berlin. The E1003 is special because it has a (relatively) high-DPI screen that can do shades of gray, as opposed to the normal pure black/pure white epaper screens. I have one hanging in my hallway and it regularly fools guests who think it's a real photo print!
A hallway wall with pictures frames hanging on it. One of the frames is the Seeed Studio reTerminal E1003 epaper screen in the stock aluminium black frame that Seeed bundles with it. The screen shows a black and white photo of the interior of a tower in Copenhagen, with the daylight from the windows lighting up the dark halls. The other picture frame in the image is a graphic design that repeats the Dutch term 'Houdoe', which is a colloquial way of saying bye in the province of Brabant.

The Artemis II mission reminds me of these 1960s photos of NASA astronauts training in Iceland because they felt the terrain would be similar to what they'd encounter on the moon. The outfits are so great, even some 60 years later.
Photo of three men standing on top of rocky terrain. One is wearing a blue zip-up jacket with a blue chambray shirt and tan chinos. One is wearing a green-black checkered jacket with red chamois shirt, white pants, and cowboy hat. The other is wearing a blue parka with with blue jeans. Two photos. In the first, three men are wearing bomber jackets with blue or white jeans. In the second image, one man is wearing an off white (possibly chamois?) shirt with blue jeans. Another is wearing a blue denim trucker with blue jeans. A third is wearing a blue quilted parka. Two photos of groups of men. They are wearing Nordic sweaters, olive bomber jackets, flight suits, black-green checkered jackets, cowboy hats, beanies, and jeans. Two photos. In one, there's a man wearing a brown tweed with a checked shirt. In the other photo, men are wearing bomber jackets and high-waisted cotton pants.
