Plant-rich diets are the food system's electrification. Petrol cars only see 18-25% of their fuel energy get to the wheels; EVs 87-91%. Heat pumps are 2 or 3 times more efficient. Food has its own combustion engine: a chicken turns about 13% of its feed calories into food, worse than a petrol car.

For 20 yrs textbook view: linear electron flow can't make enough ATP for CO₂ fixation, so plants use cyclic electron transfer (CET) to top it up. Today in @natplants.nature.com we measured ATP directly inside living chloroplasts — and that story doesn't hold. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Oil prices wouldn't be all over the news today if more of our economy was powered by local, secure renewable energy. This isn't an "energy crisis". It's a fossil fuel crisis. 44% of UK electricity came from renewables in 2025. More of that plus an electrified economy => no more oil shocks.
Crude oil prices, showing a very sharp increase in the last day, from around 65 to 101 dollars per barrel..

So happy this is out as a preprint (for) now. Since measuring ATP is tricky, we used ATP biosensors in collab with @schwarzlanderlab.bsky.social to show that in chloroplasts without PGR5, NPQ and pmf are diminished, yet ATP levels unchanged. Balancing ATP/NADPH must be achieved by different means.

As the world warms, plants in natural ecosystems and agricultural settings find ways to respond to the heat. In a new special issue of Science, researchers examine how heat affects plants at multiple scales, from the molecular level to the biosphere. scim.ag/44cSw3Z
Infrared imaging shows heat levels in sun-exposed leaves of Alstonia scholaris from the Australian Wet Tropics. As climate change increases temperatures and the severity of heat waves, both natural ecosystems and agricultural plants are increasingly affected by heat. Examining heat responses at cellular, genetic, physiological, and ecosystem scales, this special issue explores how plants sense and respond to high temperatures.
