Take a deep dive into the primeval past with GURPS Fantasy Folk: Fishfolk! This 24-page PDF supplement for GURPS Fourth Edition provides a savage martial art, a grimoire of disturbing spells, and a collection of no-less-worrisome pets and artifacts – and it's a wealth of deep lore. bit.ly/gurpsffff
The GURPS Fourth Edition logo and the cover of the PDF for GURPS Fourth Edition Fantasy Folk Fishfolk appear on a green marble background with seashells. The words "Fantasy Folk Fishfolk. They're Ancient. They're Wet. They Come from the Depths..." are above a humanoid fish illustration, social media logos, #PlaySJGames, warehouse23.com, and the Steve Jackson Games name and Eye-in-Pyramid logo.

I think "having better tactics and answers for movements of emotionally reasoning people" is one of the most pressing challenges of the current age. And it's just gotta be acknowledged that liberalism's preferred tactics have struggled to be effective.

the resort to mechanics is not a matter of doctrinaire prescriptions, but tools in a toolbox. maybe no mechanics at all: "you just lose, cthulhu squahes you" maybe very brief mechanics: decide the outcome with one contested roll maybe great detail: hex map, range penalties, the whole nine

i keep reading stuff about how business schools corrupted tech bros but never see any data linked to such claims. it's all vibes. until broader data are available, i've found this. few business majors. so many engineers, comp scientists, and mathematicians. sometimes our stereotypes are just that.

Taking notes helps you to organise your thoughts, which has been shown to air comprehension and later recall *even if you don’t actually look at the notes afterwards*. Using an #AI device to do this for you provides none of those benefits. 🤷 #AIHype #Deskilling #CognitiveScience

i realize it’s v much a dorky philosophy person thing to say, but we all gotta practice being careful with our intellectual shorthands, and not confusing words with reality. Such has it always been, yes, but a “partly digital world of instant communication” has made the need even greater

My heart breaks for mathematicians whose lives and careers are being destroyed by AI — and especially this PhD student, who doesn’t even know he is a poet
Kai Shaikh, a Ph.D. student in mathematics at the University of Toronto, also currently at SLMath, observed that theorems are easy to use as benchmarks, but that they capture little of the wonderment at the heart of math. "Just like a photograph of a mile marker can't provide much of the value of actually going on a hike," he said,
"it would seem to me that proofs without stories, or even stories without struggle or mystery, and first glimpses of strange beasts, are not very meaningful or valuable to us humans."

I think this discussion focuses on the wrong institutional function of publications. Weisberg points out you don't need journals to write, publish or discuss philosophy. What do we lose? Just 'bean counting' for deans and CV heuristics. Maybe we don't need these things, but we need institutions.

Have the courage to be bad at what you’re doing because that’s how you get good at what you’re doing. AI is fool’s gold because it promises you the ability to produce something good without getting good. You don’t believe in getting good at this thing. That’s why people don’t respect your output.

But I rarely intentionally go to music at all for this purpose. I get a dose of hymns Sundays, and I'll listen to whatever's on around me, but it takes quite a bit for me to go looking for music. Even the humming is something I more find myself (helpfully) doing than decide on.

Ben Bush @gumbybush.myatproto.social · 13/10/2026
I more often find myself humming or whistling, often hymns. These might "match," initially, but they often and purposely do so in a way that goes on to answer and develop the emotion, so that it matches throughout only because my emotions give it uptake and change with it.

Ben Bush @gumbybush.myatproto.social · 13/10/2026
I rarely listen for this purpose, but when I do, either a) the music matches in that it mainly just expresses the existing emotion or b) especially with some orchestral stuff, the music doesn't clearly do either--I'd be hard pressed to state the music's emotion beyond, maybe, "a big one."

Was watching Buffy’s Anya backstory episode. Friend asked why I sighed. “She’s not of a sufficiently high social class to have domesticated rabbits that far north in Europe in that century, but the writers couldn’t know, the paper was only presented at a conference yesterday.” Accuracy is fleeting.

I feel like some people missed a significant point of the "explain how to make a pb&j sandwich in a way a computer could follow" exercise. a) we presuppose background knowledge and don't think in code-ready units, b) we'll leave out contingency plans and find it even harder to make those explicit.
