New veggie garden! 1/? 🌱 #gardening I'm starting a new veggie garden, so last fall I smothered a section of lawn. I had a lot of junk laying around I was able to use before buying anything new. Here I took down an old playset and used it fenceposts. The pavers were also left over from prev owners.

The boneset is a hit, and very easy to grow. I planted it this year and it's very healthy with just a bit of supplemental watering at the start. It's been ignored by rabbits and deer as well. It's attracting a lot more flies and wasps than bees or butterflies, not that that's a bad thing!

This is why I’m optimistic about energy innovation: It took the global solar industry 68 years to reach 1 terawatt (TW) of installed power, from the first commercial silicon solar cell in 1954 to 2022. The next 1TW was delivered in only two additional years from 2023 to 2024.

Today is Darwin Day, in celebration of the birthday of Charles Darwin. In my view, he is the most important scientist in history. He was also a delightful writer, and wrote books across a broad range of biology. They are very readable. 1/3
A winter landscape of fields with snow and orange grasses. To the left is a huge bur oak. To the right is a quote from Charles Darwin’s Origin of Species: “What a struggle between the several kinds of trees must here have gone on during long centuries, each annually scattering its seeds by the thousand; what war between insect and insect - between insects, snails, and other animals with birds and beasts of prey - all striving to increase, and all feeding on each other or on the trees or their seeds and seedlings, or on the other plants which first clothed the ground
and thus checked the growth of the trees”

Last year was the first year I was really able to garden, after renting apartments for years. But it was a busy year, so I didn't plan, just threw stuff into the ground and observed Among the things I learned is that you need ~four rows of pollination for proper corn. I planted four.. stalks 🌱

We're not going shopping today, are we. So we might as well go for a walk in the trees. And while we are there, we might as well learn about them and even hug a few. The big chinkapin oak is known as "The Great God Tree."
