The easy way to stop there being new art for you to steal is to make it financially impossible for anybody to earn a living making art. Every branch we all sit on sawn through. Nobody asked for the branches to be sawn through. But they came and sawed through them for us all the same. Twats.

this. this is the feeling. the climate is the pressing issue of our era! do you remember when it got to 40C in London this summer?! it's somehow a beautiful summer afternoon out there in early October right now! we do need this to be taken seriously politically!

ACTIVITY: Read the following passage and match each Gibb to the drug they're addicted to!
[Wikipedia screenshot]

Petersen described the contrasting dispositions of the Gibb brothers as follows:

"They have totally different personalities, Robin is a very temperamental and very highly strung person. His music is his whole life and he is highly sensitive to criticism. Barry is a very easy-going and receptive type. He adapts himself to the situations he finds himself in at the time. He is very interested in the potential acting possibilities of the group. I think he would like to be a film star more than a singer. Maurice is closer to my attitudes and ideas. He has the same kind of humour as I have. We have other common interests like playing chess. He's the kind of guy who will come over and give you a hand washing the car. As brothers, they really have very little in common, except the feeling that they are living for the day".[26]

[A parody of MR ROGERS’ NEIGHBOURHOOD, in which the kindly Mr Rogers takes us to see local things in his town.]

1
[title]
MR ROGERS’ NEIGHBOURHOOD

MR ROGERS:

Hi there

2
Today, I’d like to take you to visit some of my neighbours…

[He puts his coat on to leave his house]

3
At a wonderful local event,

[We see the cute toy-town diorama of his village famous from the TV show. The camera pulls out…]

4
The Data Center protest.

[The camera has pulled out further and now we see a huge DATA CENTER at the edge of town].

5
MR ROGERS [joining a crowd protesting outside the Data Center]:

The Data Center is an enormous, windowless, endlessly humming building outside of our town

6
…Which has tripled energy prices, drank all the water, and created four jobs.

7
[to camera, as if kindly explaining to the viewing children]:

Four jobs! Golly!

8
LADY PROTESTOR [probably NAOMI KLEIN, holding a sign]:

In a way, the Data Center is kind of a vivid metaphor for a future we feel locked out of!

9
MR ROGERS [to camera again]:

A metaphor.

10
That’s something that lets us clarify our feelings about something else.

11
LADY PROTESTOR:
How do you feel, Mr Rogers?

MR ROGERS:
I feel like bringing down the government!

12
MR ROGERS [now holding a sign and protesting]:

It’s good to have neighbors.

[ends]

So many people already dealing with parents/grandparents with the toxic combination of diminishing mental faculties, online radicalisation via social media and AI slop, and chatbot seduction. Unfortunately we are now all getting to see what happens when one of those cases is the president of the USA

Woah - this isn’t just me seeing things, right? #BadenochTapestry
Border detail from the Tories “Badenoxh Tapestry” A figure that looks to me like a classic antisemitic caricature shooting arrows at one labelled “tax payer”. For further context, the next detail along is a small boat full of brown people.

A man builds an IED. He sets it off in a busy public street. Shrapnel flies about hitting cars, homes and a child's bedroom. It's a miracle nobody is injured. And Reform MP Sarah Pochin calls his imprisonment "disproportionate" and "two tier justice."
It does raise this point of two-tiered
justice..

Reform's Sarah Pochin believes the
sentence handed to the 64-year-old who
blew up a ULEZ camera was
disproportionate'.

Best part of this muddled article by one of Bloomberg's money guys is that two of the charts make a compelling case that knee-jerk opposition to AI is wholly justified because technological progress doesn't increase productivity, it just enables greater income extraction by capital. Oops!

I feel like the debate about what parts of AI are good and what parts are bad should wait until we solve the worldwide crisis caused by the fact that almost of all of its evangelists in both tech and govt are morally, intellectually, and ethically unequipped to oversee it, when not downright evil.

Also, novelizations (or at least short story adaptations) of films were very much a thing from the 1910s on and can be a valuable glimpse into lost films, even if nothing else survives.

There is something slightly detached and surreal about climate discourse at the moment, especially in the spheres of politics and business. The entire Northern Hemisphere has just experienced the most extreme summer on record, triggering deadly climate impacts, fuelling food insecurity and inflation, and resulting in billions of dollars of economic costs. We're deep into our second fossil fuel shock inside five years, with no end in sight and a winter of crippling energy cost hikes ahead that are a direct result of fossil fuel reliance and the geopolitical instability it enables. The cheerleaders for climate denialism and fossil fuel boosterism are the most unpopular and corrupt American President in history and a motley alliance of some of the worst people in the world.
