Winner of the Wolfson History Prize in 2006 for Framing the Early Middle Ages: Europe and the Mediterranean, 400-800; his research transformed our understanding of the period. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, colleagues, and students.

There's a map issued to Polish airmen in WW2 that has all the place names spelled phonetically because they were being given directions in English by ground control.

Google finally updated some of its satellite images of Gaza and my god, it's horrific. The entirety of Rafah has been demolished. The majority of Khan Younis is in ruins. Entire towns completely leveled and erased of the map.
