This is insane. When I was in first grade my parents let me walk 3 blocks to school in the mornings, and home after it was over. The independence that I got as a child helped me so much in my life. No parent should face charges for something like this, let alone be convicted!
In June, when Parkinson was preparing for the bar—and also happened to be eight months pregnant with her fifth child—she and her then-youngest, Sam, went for a bike ride, as they often do. They stopped for her son's favorite activity: collecting goose feathers from the path near their community pond. When they got home, he asked if he could walk back and get some more.

Parkinson said yes. It's a short walk, along a sidewalk separated from the street by 10 feet of grass. Sam would have to cross two streets with crosswalks, which she'd seen him do safely hundreds of times—including six times that morning, she says. Off he went while she made lunch.

A passerby saw Sam and alerted security. One of the community's security guards escorted the boy back and gave Parkinson an earful. Pretty soon there were three cop cars, just as many cops, a security vehicle, and two Child Protective Services (CPS) workers at Parkinson's door.

CPS ended up investigating her for abuse and neglect.

The cops, meanwhile, charged her with contributing to the delinquency of a minor. CPS found the allegations substantiated and placed Parkinson on the state's child abuse and neglect registry. She will remain there for seven years.

from 1957-1977 the Italian broadcaster RAI ran 1000s of "caroselli" ads, often with famous personalities of the period... my favorite is the series for Barilla (yes, the pasta brand) featuring the singer Mina, particularly her Se Telefonando, filmed (1967) on the roof of the Naples train station...

A truism that makes DS9 two parter “Past Tense” even more remarkable. Set 30 years in the future when it was made in 1994 and so frighteningly close to our current reality on so many counts.

Yeah! And then when I’m happy with the recordings, I have them forever and I can post them so students can listen again and again. One of the biggest mistakes in language classes in general, but especially ancient languages, is expecting students to do things we haven’t ever modeled for them

Gregory Stringer @gregorystringer.bsky.social · 20/08/2026
Absolutely!! Making recordings for my students has so many benefits- for me AND them! As an advanced reader, I can get better by practicing rhythm, intonation, pauses, etc. For the students as novices, sight reading along to well read passages helps strengthen all those skills in them as well!

Sorry, I kinda had to. I can’t speak for everyone, but for many of us who saw it when it first came out, the combination of it being so unlike anything else out at the time and snappy writing which plays with genre in a clever way, made it so memorable, quotable, and therefore rewatchable.

Google on a mission to destroy one of its only products that has been an unqualified success. Classroom has basically become K-12 public school infrastructure at this point. Parents need to tell their districts about this so they can turn that setting off. Teachers must be able to disable it too.

Just like any other learning management system you can post assignments and due dates and easily track when students hand things in and it creates a google doc for each student for each assignment which you can both quickly flip through, comment AND view their docs and see their tracked changes

Why not try Google Classroom? I’ve used it for both my actual high school students where I teach and for adult online Italian classes I’ve taught and other programs I’ve run and it is free and very simple both to manage and for students to navigate. They don’t even need a google email to use it.

I, however, have had the exact *opposite* experience doing a dual enrollment Latin V class. I set the curriculum, students get 1 semester of Latin credit (at a 201 level) so if their uni has a language requirement they still have to do at least 1 sem & now they have an incentive to stick with Latin!
