Talk about a rarity of a feel-good story. So tell me again, Elon, why empathy is “the worst human weakness.” Had you been on the crashed plane, would you still say that?

Relationships matter most when learning gets uncomfortable. When the work gets harder. When a student gets it wrong. When asking for help feels risky. When frustration rises. Strong relationships lower the social intensity so we can increase the academic intensity.

What if the behavior we’re trying to stop is telling us something about the learning we need to redesign? The ASCEND Approach connects behavior, motivation, engagement & how students learn—then asks what we can do differently before, during & after.

Teachers already know behavior is hard. The bigger question is why it keeps happening—and what we can do differently. ASCEND offers a better map for what to do before, during & after those moments. Link: www.google.com/url?q=https:...

We often start responding to behavior the moment we see it. But the real story begins earlier—when a student’s brain is predicting, interpreting, and deciding what the moment means. Tomorrow, after five years of work, I get to share The ASCEND Approach.

As we kick off the year, it’s tempting to jump right into the curriculum, but let’s remember to slow down and build our routines and expectations first. We’ll lean on them thousands of times this year, and they’re what open the door to the learning.

Using social media in middle school predicts lower standardized test scores in high school. Evidence: 10th graders who started social media before 9th grade are ~6 months behind their peers on math & reading. They're more distracted by their phones. No child should have access to social media.

Film yourself teaching and watch it. It’s eye opening to see what your habits are. For example, I start a LOT of sentences with “So…” I also learned a lot about the frequency and type of questions I ask. It truly made me a better teacher. It’s awkward at first, but it’s totally worth it. —Laura Miller, Teacher
