For those of y'all who didn't have a child in 2025, a taste of what it looks like to attempt to access the new child tax benefit. This SUCKS.

Every academic who writes in short snatches of time, in cafes, on trains, and at the breakfast table, imagines that every other academic retreats every evening to an elegant desk in a book-lined study and spends hours deep in concentration filling page after page with original scholarly reflection.

You can almost always find unexpected things in manuscripts. Today: an Ethiopian scribe trying his hand on a Greek note in an Arabic manuscript (Sin. ar. 506). It's not only the shape of some letters, or the use of textual dividers, but esp. the sneakily inserted word ቀሌምኮስ that gives him away.

It’s the service role that ✅ leaves a giant hole in your CV ✅ invites resentment and hostility from your institution ✅ even in best case scenario won’t improve your material conditions as much as leaving academia would. There‘s literally no other reason to do it than belief in the mission.

My first crack at editing a volume of any sort, and so lucky to do it with these brilliant and adventuresome colleagues. An honor to be trusted with their scholarship! What's the vol. about? To perhaps strain bsky's patience for digesting big chunks of text, an excerpt from our introductory essay:
Screenshot of an excerpt from an article: "We offer here, then, the analytical observation that we seem to have collectively stumbled into: The critical edition is a particularly productive locus around which to cultivate an infrastructural disposition to philology—for both historians of philology and practitioners in philology’s descendant disciplines—because it is both the most highly charged productive purpose towards which philological infrastructure is laid down and a crucial nexus at which philological infrastructure interfaces with the infrastructures of scholarly community, commerce, and state power. For this reason, the infrastructural disposition nurtured through the contextual study of critical editions invites critical attention at three distinct, but overlapping, levels: (1) the development of scholarly methods in coordination with the philological instruments that facilitate them; (2) the informal networks of human relationships and the formal structures of universities, libraries, corporations, and governments that organize themselves around the production of ancient texts; and (3) the way that a given edition can itself function as infrastructural for historical or hermeneutical engagements with the past. It is no accident that such an infrastructural disposition has begun to take root among historians of scholarship interested in the monumental, intricately engineered early modern polyglot Bibles. In this issue we seek to not only surface the infrastructural disposition as it is emerging in biblical studies, but also to suggest its value as an analytical approach to help bridge early modern and late modern histories..."Screenshot of an excerpt from an article: "...of scholarship, as well as to bridge the history of philological scholarship with its ongoing practice. [Header] The Critical Edition in the Infrastructure of Philology [end of Header] The contributions collected in this issue, arranged chronologically by subject, provide a series of vignettes illustrating how the critical edition fits into the broader emergent infrastructure of philology from the Republic of Letters to the Cold War."
