this all made me rethink my dislike for the Expo '74 Book of Mormon Pavilion in Spokane, and now I think everything in Utah from nuclear data centers to dirty soda drivethrus should be built in the style of the Golden Plates Pavilion greg.org/archive/2026...
a postcard from the 1974 world expo in spokane washington depicts an architectural model of the mormon pavilion, which is shaped like a giant three ring binder of golden plates, with the stack on the right being higher. the entry hall under the rings is enclosed in glass. a statue of the angel moroni on a column stands in front of the right half of the pavilion, and fake trees and grass surround it, even though the actual pavilion was built on pylons over the river. via visitexpo74 dot com, but these postcards are also all over ebaya vertical wood block is wrapped in overlapping copper strip, with the strips on one side bent slightly up so they form the equivalent of a space or window, while preserving the overall sense of opacity. a tall antenna like stick on top, an architectural model for a railroad signal box by herzog and de meuron in moma's collection

it predates Calder, but shoutout to Edward Wadsworth's 1919 masterpiece, Dazzleships in Drydock in Liverpool greg.org/archive/2024...
a very large painting of the prow of a grey white and black stripe painted battleship with four tiny fitures painting the hull below the waterline red, parked in a drydock made up of pipes and industrial elements in similar intersecting patters to the ship's camo. by edward wadsworth, who made a realistic painting of an abstract subject to get around a memorial competition's ban on abstraction

New: USPS is to put cameras in its trucks that continuously record. This is to gather data on roads, signage, and to improve "community safety," the agency tells me. The cameras are marketed to capture passing license plates too, but don't run ALPR software www.404media.co/usps-to-put-...

the mormon pavilion at the 1974 spokane world expo is two rectangular structures of the same dimension but different heights, finished in gold, with three giant rings connecting them, as if the golden plates joseph smith got from the angel moroni were a giant three ring binder. the structure is on pylons over water, and reflected in the water, with a clocktower of some kind on the right, thematically unrelated.
