DONALD TRUMP is “absolutely right” to demand more of the UK on defence spending, Wes Streeting has said.

The Defence Secretary said Britain must be war-fighting ready by 2030 after Nato warned that Russia could strike a member of the transatlantic alliance by that date.

In an interview with The Telegraph after a summit of defence ministers in Keflavik, Iceland, Mr Streeting said: “We want to be deterring Russia, and we want to make sure that if deterrence fails, we’re ready to defeat our enemies.

“It’s why the Nato alliance is absolutely critical. Nato-first is our policy, but also it’s why I’ve been really keen to make clear to our friends in the United States of America that, as far as we’re concerned, President Trump and his administration have been absolutely right to demand more of the UK, more of Europe. We’ve got to step up and carry more of the responsibility for defending our own continent.”

He made the comments in the lead-up to the first Budget of Andy

Burnham’s premiership, with Labour MPs split over calls to cut the soaring welfare bill to find the money to boost defence.

John Healey, the Chancellor, has refused to chart a path to spending 3 per cent of GDP on defence by 2030 despite resigning as Defence Secretary over the issue during Sir Keir Starmer’s premiership.

Mr Healey has signalled he will fully fund the Government’s defence investment plan in the upcoming Budget, but deferred outlining a pathway to 3 per cent to the 2027 spending review.

Despite that, Mr Streeting, his successor at the Ministry of Defence (MoD), insisted that Labour was “well on our way” to spending 3 per cent of GDP on defence.
