I'm making a Low-magic, Narrative, Hardboiled, Fantasy Mystery RPG. Some touchstones include: The Witcher, Princess Mononoke, Priest by Matthew Colville, and various fantasy & detective fiction. If that sounds interesting, you can read more about it here: tinyurl.com/MA-rpg

Artist! Quote with your badass woman 🏮
A digital sketch of a woman wearing armour made from human arms and skulls linked together by grasping hands. A portion of her face is cracked and rift with fissures across her face, revealing a fleshy texture beneath her skin. One of her eyes is glazed over and white.
She has four arms, two of them are holding weapons, while another holds aloft a glowing lantern made from an altered human skull with one very large ocular opening to serve as the primary source of light from the lantern.
Her fourth arm is holding the corpse of a large creature over her shoulder. The creature has large teeth, spines along its back, and fins down its sides.
Perched on top of the dead creature is an otter-like companion. Both the woman and the otter are looking off into the distance, the lantern presumably illuminating what they're looking at.

Artist! Quote with your gloomy art!
A digital sketch of a large stone monolith. Embedded in it s a skeletal humanoid, its skull is missing its upper half and the sternum is extended down into a point. its forearms and hands are also protruding from the stone.
The stone is also engraved with markings and writing.
At the foot of the stone, a figure is knelt in front of it, one hand placed on the face of the stone.

I'm cautiously optimistic about RPG Trader. If you don't know, it's a new platform for buying and selling rpgs just like DriveThruRPG, Itch, and Lulu. What's making me optimistic? It's rpg-focused. It does away with the 5-star rating system. It has coherent product categories. rpg-trader.com

When a dragon has just 1 hit point and a maze of obstacles, combat is like an open-ended puzzle. The challenge: the player characters only have 1 hit point too—and the dragon has a lot fewer obstacles. A small playtesting update about death without hit points:

I will always find a game designed for a hyper specific thing to be way more interesting than something generic. “In this game you play as space pirates who rob space trains” is way more compelling design than “This is a space game where you can do anything.”

DriveThruRPG/Dungeon Master's Guild is bad for the industry. They take 30-50%. Discoverability is terrible. You're competing with slop, which turns customers off from third-party in general. You have no way of knowing who bought your products. You can't offer better discounts on other sites. 1/5

Lots of tech dudes think the "idea" is the important part of creating, not the creative journey you take through work to give that idea actual meaning. Ideas are the easiest, cheapest and least fulfilling part of it. Giving ideas life through work, and sharing that work with others, is the stuff.

I'm designing outside of D&D 5e or 5.5e at this point, HOWEVER, I am fiercely editing a really fresh and weird genre mashup for it: Serenity Springs, a 1950's horror setting & adventure. The kickstarter is up, check it out if it strikes your fancy 😊 www.kickstarter.com/projects/gri...
Says "Freaks from Beyond the Hayze: A Serenity Springs Adventure." across the top. The art shows a black and white suburban street with several DnD characters in the mid-ground. The foreground is full of people in 1950's-appropriate clothing looking scared and confused. The characters contrast the foreground people and the rest of the image, as they are red.Says "Serenity Springs: Realm of Noxious Nostalgia" across the top. Depicts a couple sitting down to dinner inside a 1950's-style diner, while a giant flying bug monster menaces them from just outside their window. The Grinning Portal Games logo is in the bottom left and the 5e compatible logo is in the bottom right.

A 1950s suburb isn't gonna have traditional DnD dungeons, so how about a landed Roswell-coded UFO? Notes to my music guy for this part just reads "Theramin ass theramin." Intrigued? Check out the Kickstarter for Serenity Springs, launching March 31 tinyurl.com/3pppxe2h #ttrpg #dnd #5e
A large gridded DnD map all in black and white. Its the interior of a circular UFO. There is one large room in the center that leads out to 8 miscellaneous connected smaller circular rooms around it. In order starting from the top and going clockwise the rooms contain:
- Some navigation equipment
- An engine room
- An armory
- A room full of strange mold that was taken over by a monster
- Cryosleep chambers
- A laboratory
- Storage for captured people
- a space that prints food and spare parts

I'm editing this project and I playtested too! I'm usually a fantasy die-hard but it's been a blast to be in a blend of genres. I keep thinking about A Wrinkle In Time when they go to the neighborhood where everything is a copy and everyone is acting the exact same. Those are the vibes

You could distill this to "most people will never actually engage with games on their own terms, up to and including actually reading or even playing the game" which is why lots of those people think game design isn't real and also why the success of RPGs is measured largely by your art budget

The trouble with predicting the future is that it's impossible to do. People have been trying since the dawn of humans and no one has succeed yet! Don't trust folks who claim they can tell you what will happen next (even if they are "experts")

The "traditional" structure of TTRPGs puts an enormous amount of pressure on the GM to learn/refine & very little on the players. Which is somehow seen as more reasonable than spreading the load of learning/contribution across the whole table. Broader implications about community in there, y'all.

A topic that comes up with my games is that they seem one way on the page, but then “reveal themselves” when played. This is an intentional part of the design! I think games are a more powerful experience if they don’t show what they’re really doing until you spend some time with them at the table.
