Techbros seem to love Tolkien, so here's an analogy to help you understand what genAI is. GenAI is The One Ring. You think your use is justified, b/c you don't have evil in your heart. But it came from evil, it is intended for evil purpose, & anything you do with it will be twisted to that end.

Boromir from THE LORD OF THE RINGS, holding The One Ring. He thought he could use it for good, but everything done with the ring turns to evil. He was one of the mightiest warriors of middle earth, and he could not resist its powers. Others even mightier fell to the ring. Do you think you are stronger than them? The One Ring is generative AI.

Wraparound over illustration for the Special Limited Edition of 'The Odyssey' by Homer painted by Eleonor Piteira for Wraithmarked Creative, showing a strong Odysseus with grey streaks in his hair and short dark beard, wearing golden armour and holding a spear and a shield, while standing in the sun before a mural made of mosaics featuring Athena standing over Ithaka and the sea while a few ships leave. Been thinking on the use of GenAi for mood boards. Ethics and legal risks aside, I truly believe using GenAi as references deprives one of many pivotal things. Here’s a blurb on what I mean:

Some thoughts:
When using GenAi as a mood board you don't get sources. This means you deprive yourself from knowledge.
You generated a location? You deprived yourself of knowing more about the interesting parts of the world and why things came to be.
Generate an armor or costume? You deprived yourself on real world techniques, function, form and history.
You generated art inspirations? You deprive yourself of learning about artists from history or lock out living ones from potentially being hired.
Ethical issues of using GenAi models aside, one ends up making visuals mood boards devoid of reality and history. With it one deprives themselves from learning about our world and who is living in it, inadvertently making your work weaker, because of how detached it is from our shared human reality and history.
