Pick up a copy of The Influencer Factory for only $13, a book one reader described as “I feel like this is how nineteenth century proletarians must have felt reading Marx: like it just perfectly describes every last tiny indignity of working life, even the ones you’d never fully noticed before”!

Every future imagined by a tech company is worse than the previous iteration.
OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, has a plan to overhaul college education — by embedding its artificial intelligence tools in every facet of campus life.
If the company’s strategy succeeds, universities would give students A.I. assistants to help guide and tutor them from orientation day through graduation. Professors would provide customized A.I. study bots for each class. Career services would offer recruiter chatbots for students to practice job interviews. And undergrads could turn on a chatbot’s voice mode to be quizzed aloud ahead of a test.
OpenAI dubs its sales pitch “A.I.-native universities.”

A frustrated letter from the Library of Congress asking Norbert Weiner what section of a library his book is supposed to be in (1949).

DEWEY DECIMAL CLASSIFICATION
LIBRARY OF CONGRESS WASHINGTON, D. C.
Dec. 2, 1949
Dr. Norbert Wiener
Mass. Institute of Technology Cambridge, Nass.
My dear Dr. Wiener:
The publication of your book on Cybernetics has caused the editorial staff which is in charge of the revision of the Dewey Decimal Classification considerable difficulty. We are in the position of being asked by sincere inquirers as to how to classify the book and by less sincere people who like to confront supposedly expert classifiers with problems which they are quite certain are beyond our capabilities. Quite frankly, cybernetics is. We have read and reread reviews and explanations of the content of your book and have even tried to understand the book itself, only to become more uncertain as to what field it falls into. I am appealing to you as the one person who should be able to tell us.
Possibly you already know that the Dewey Decimal Classification attempts to assign a number to the subject content of books. Generally speaking, a book can only be assigned one number and consequently we cannot take care of the many aspects that certain works cover. The problem must be simplified and consequently, is your book such as to place it in psychology? Does it belong in the field of electronic computation devices or does it belong in mathematics?
If we were not somewhat desperate about this particular problem, I should hesitate to bother you with it.
Cordially yours,
Esther P. Potter
Director

The Influencer Factory: A Marxist Theory of Corporate Personhood on YouTube - Grant Bollmer and Katherine Guinness
Influencers are more than social media personalities who attract attention for brands, argue Grant Bollmer and Katherine Guinness. They are figures of a new transformation in capitalism, in which the logic of the self is indistinguishable from the logic of the corporation. Influencers are emblematic of what Bollmer and Guinness call the Corpocene: a moment in capitalism in which individuals achieve the status of living, breathing, talking corporations. Behind the veneer of leisure and indulgence, most influencers are laboring daily, usually for pittance wages, to manufacture a commodity called the self—a raw material for brands to use—with the dream of becoming corporations in human form by owning and investing in the products they sell. Refuting the theory that digital labor and economies are immaterial, Bollmer and Guinness search influencer content for evidence of the material infrastructure of capitalism. Each chapter looks to what literally appears in the backgrounds of videos and images: the houses, cars, warehouses, and spaces of the market that point back to the manufacturing and circulation of consumer goods. Demonstrating the material reality of producing the self as a commodity, The Influencer Factory makes a crucial contribution to our understanding of contemporary economic life.
