Thread. This is also why they want to replace teachers with AI, replace musicians and writers with AI, replace scientists with AI. They want total control of the information people are exposed to. It's a dream that would make Lenin blush. The boldest act of rebellion is always thinking for yourself

should be instructive for democrats that Magyar is living up to his promise to prosecute Orban officials for corruption and is continuing to poll extremely highly

Not sure it’s tenable if, going forward, every president knows that so long as they have firm control over DOJ, enough loyal senators to avoid removal, and are willing to issue blanket pardons on the way out, they can break any law they please while in office.

Communist counties are famously known for holding police accountable to the public, and for their lack of policies promoting domestic manufacturing. Right? But of course in this context, "communist," like "illegal immigrant," just means non-white. "It's all just racism" is the MAGA Rosetta stone.

Yes. I think the consensus among US elite pundits and senior politicians that the way to protect liberal democracy is *not* to punish elite figures who violate its rules is wrong. A norm starting at least with the Watergate pardon. The opposite is true. You need to enforce the law and Constitution.

I wonder what the likely consequences are of rendering it impossible to enact justice within the boundaries of the law? Surely attempting such a thing won't in any way backfire on those attempting to elude accountability.

It’s interesting how much we’ve seen of this. Trump & especially the folks around them were absolutely crystal clear that mass deportation would not be about rounding up criminals, but peaceful, taxpaying workers & families by the millions…

As I’ve said before, a lot of modern American Evangelicalism is just a lifestyle brand for right-wing authoritarianism. It has no real core principles; its function is just to ventriloquize whatever otherwise-indefensible view serves power as a command from God.

I'm not saying no one has real grievances - although honestly, a lot of MAGA and AfD voters basically don't have real grievances (lotta 'boat parade' fascists out there) - but the only problem these far-right parties have shown any interest in solving is 'not enough people are mean to minorities.'

As we get deeper into anti-fascist collaboration between liberals and progressives, with likely many years remaining ahead, I think it's worth thinking some about the basis for and necessity of that collaboration, as well as its limits. Quoted post a case-in-point. Thread follows.

Trump is a return to *that* kind of corruption. Not baleful special interests influence in politics, not petty local schemes managing to fly under the radar. Full-scale, completely unchecked, all of government for sale and official powers openly abused for personal profit.

One of the unfortunate things about property rights is that they're understood--by people on every side of the discussion--to be mostly about the rich. Yet when you've only got a little, knowing that it's secure from seizure means so much more, and not just for peace of mind.

It was a big mistake that politicians and civic leaders haven’t been uniformly insistent about prosecuting ICE and others involved in this ethic cleansing campaign. They know what they’re doing is illegal (why else wear masks and scrub tail numbers off planes?) and they’re afraid of consequences.

Chat, is it good when an aspiring authoritarian is purging the military leadership to install politically reliable generals (gift: www.nytimes.com/2026/08/28/u...)
Hegseth Blocks Promotions of Four Army Officers as Purge Widens

The turmoil has left a leadership vacuum in the Army at a moment when it is trying to find ways to defend troops against the threat posed by cheap drones.Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is blocking the promotions of four Army officers selected for promotion to one-star rank, a highly unusual move that appears to be targeting officers who worked for generals he does not like, current and former defense officials said.

So far this year Mr. Hegseth has removed at least 45 officers, selected by boards made up of peers, from promotion lists. More than half of those officers have been female or Black.

Mr. Hegseth’s actions appear to violate the rules governing a promotion system that is meant to be apolitical and merit-based.

I remain *more* uneasy with this than with, say, the case of a great researcher who is garbage at writing (or writing in the desired language) & gets an LLM to convert their findings into prose. I think there’s an untenable implied dichotomy between the ideas or arguments and their prose expression.

Writing is thinking! And clear, rigorous writing is clear, rigorous thinking. "Putting it into words" is not some formality you do after the hard work is done, like handing off a new product to the marketing team--it *is* the work.

you actually can't give the state just a little more power, just one more capability that will be heavily regulated by a nonpartisan oversight committee, and maintain that level of containment for any length of time. sorry, but that doesn't happen and in 2026 it's ridiculous to pretend otherwise

This is what’s especially troubling about the current majority. I find Dobbs morally appalling in its consequences, but it does follow more or less coherently from a particular jurisprudential philosophy. But you can’t plausibly say that about many recent rulings, where approach serves outcome.

The breakdown of the police/military distinction is one of those disasters--like the legislature controlling military spending, rather than the executive paying his own private army--that gets at an issue so fundamental to modern politics that the layman lacks the vocabulary to talk about it.

When you make anti-immigration policy cruel and dehumanizing enough, in future years it won't matter that we've gone back to welcoming immigrants. The memory of what we did will be there, and so will the risk that we may do it again.

This is the point--the putative advantage of first-past-the-post is that rather than the fascist party or the tankie party having 5% of power, it gets 0%, and the relative moderates get 100% instead of 95%. We are living in the failure mode.
