The witness took a look inside all the nearby rooms and found them to be empty. She saw the apparition on a second occasion, too. The owners had never had the impression their house was haunted or knew of any tale to account for the ghost's presence. It was never seen again and remains a mystery.

...which I took to be the housemaid going up before me. I went up the entire flight of stairs under this impression to the first floor, when suddenly at the top I could see nobody. This puzzled me, as I could not account for anyone being able to disappear so quickly.'

In my thread on haunted staircases, I'd forgotten this one. In June 1884, Kathleen Leigh Hunt was staying with her cousin in a house in Hyde Park Place, #London. She told the @spr1882.bsky.social : 'One morning I seemed to see, about two stairs in front of me, a figure...' [Cont: #SpookySunday
An illustration from an article by Beckles Wilson in The Strand Magazine in 1908 of a woman in Victorian dress climbing a domestic flight of stairs. In front of her is walking a ghostly woman dressed as a housemaid.

I can’t remember which Blueskyer remined me that staircases are liminal, like bridges and crossroads, and therefore favourable for hauntings. There are many #haunted examples – such as the one where the famous Brown Lady of Raynham, #Norfolk, was maybe photographed in the 1930s. [More #SpookySunday

Owl of the Day: Little Owl 📷 Pascal De Munck
Photo of owl perched on tree stump, description from ebird: ‘Small owl of fairly open country, such as farmland with hedges and scattered trees, orchards, open woodland, and quarries. Distinctive, with white-spotted upperparts. Staring yellow eyes and white brows, together with frequently upright stance, often create alert appearance. Nests in cavities in trees and rocks. Sometimes active by day, perching quietly on posts or rocks, but mainly active dusk to dawn. Flight low and undulating. Vocalizations are comprised of a range of endearing squeaks and high-pitched hoots.’

Lovely limestone plaque carved with the face of an owl! 🦉❤️ The solemn gaze from across the centuries gives an air of ancient wisdom! From Egypt, Late Period–Ptolemaic Period, 400–30 BC. Met Museum 📷 by me #OwlishMonday #Archaeology
My photo shows a small, roughly square-shaped piece of limestone carved to depict a frontal face of an owl. The owl has large, rounded eyes and a long, pointed beak highlighted with fine diagonal incised lines. The face is outlined by two symmetrical fan-like feather patterns with a raised border around the eyes, cheeks, and beak. Dimensions: Height 10.3 cm x Width 11.1 cm x Depth 2.5 cm This relief represents the ancient Egyptian owl hieroglyph 'm'. The limestone plaque is displayed in a glass case at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Wisteria: Ashikaga Flower Park, Japan. Photography by Hiro Ino on 500px
Captured at Ashikaga Flower Park in Tochigi Prefecture, this photograph by Hiro Ino offers a lush botanical composition of cascading wisteria (fuji) blossoms in shifting shades of soft violet-purple (murasaki-fuji) and pale rose-pink (usubeni-fuji). In the upper section, sweeping tendrils of lavender wisteria drape like an ornate floral curtain from heavy, gnarled timber supports, contrasted by fresh spring green foliage. In the foreground, dense clusters of delicate pink wisteria spill over a raised wooden planter in layered, cloud-like mounds. Along the lower right border, a carpet of white and pink daisies dots the garden floor. Diffused, soft daylight envelops the blossoms, highlighting the silky, translucent texture of individual petals.

Traditional Japanese umbrella, Jurin-ji temple (十輪寺), Kyoto. Photography by Damien Douxchamps on Flickr.
Gazing upward from beneath the glowing canopy of a traditional oil-paper umbrella (wagasa), the viewer is enveloped in a sea of radiant, sun-drenched crimson. A precise radial matrix of fine, split-bamboo ribs radiates outward from a central spindle, woven with an intricate, geometric web of structural threadwork. Through the translucent, oiled washi paper, the dark silhouettes of leafy tree branches project like delicate ink brushstrokes against a glowing red sky. The scene evokes a rich, immersive sensory atmosphere: the warm, vermilion-tinted light filtering onto the face, the faint, earthy aroma of perilla oil and aged bamboo, the soft rustle of wind through temple trees overhead, and the deep, quiet sanctuary formed beneath the red dome.
Captured within the tranquil grounds of Jurin-ji (十輪寺)—a historic Tendai temple in western Kyoto famously known as Narihira-dera after the celebrated Heian-period poet Ariwara no Narihira—this large outdoor umbrella (nodaigasa) traditionally shelters guests during open-air tea gatherings (nodate). The construction of a traditional wagasa represents one of Japan's most refined heritage crafts, where a single length of bamboo is meticulously split into dozens of flexible ribs, joined to a hand-carved wooden hub, and stretched with hand-poured mulberry paper sealed with natural vegetable oils. Every detail—from the structural tension of the bamboo frame to the delicate hand-strung thread reinforcement (kikyō-buki)—honors centuries of monozukuri (artisanal mastery and reverence for material), transforming a functional shade into a portable architectural sanctuary.

Whenever I see men like this, being so idiotic and cruel, I think about the women in their life. What were they like? Did these men have strong wives and they felt so inadequate that they turned their hate on other strong women or possibly bachelors who were taught to dislike women?
