Today is #HobbitDay because Bilbo and Frodo Baggins were both born on September 22nd. Normally we'd shire a hobbit pun or two but it might just feel like a tolkien gesture and we don't want to embarrass our elves. Anyway it's a good day to come and boromir #Tolkien books. 📚

Right everyone the wine harvest is about to start. Have we got our hedgehogs at the ready?
We are looking at a scene from the Bestiary of Rochester showing three hedgehogs having what we can only describe as the best time collecting grapes off vines. One is covered with grapes and is heading off into the burrow whilst the other two are on their backs rolling around in the grapes. The whole scene is then gilded with the exception of the blue and green vines and the brown hedgehogs.

That day when I was looking through a 14th-century romance. First impression: That's not a very good stag, is it... Closer look: OMG LOOOOOL #medievalmanuscripts
Bottom half of a manuscript page where we can see a drum player and an odd-looking stag.A close-up on the stag reveals that it's a man-made costume: the two hind legs are human feet, the fore legs are a cane or crutch, and a human face can be seen peering out through the fur of the chest

Today is the feast day of St Columba (Colum Cille), who according to tradition, wrote the Cathach (RIA MS 12 R 33) as a copy of a Latin psalter belonging to St Finnian in a single night. A dispute arose about the ownership of the copy leading to the battle of Cúl Dreimne in AD 561.

Meet the Bart Simpson of 16th century Ireland 😈 An Ceithearnach Caoilriabhach was a rule-breaking trickster in Early Modern Irish culture, a disruptive figure who left chaos in his wake, writes Dr Brianán Ní Bhuachalla @ceilteachomn.bsky.social www.maynoothuniversity.ie/research/spo...
An intricate medieval engraving depicting a feast scene. Several figures in fur-trimmed garments sit around a long table set with empty plates and a tankard. One person gestures animatedly, and another plays a harp. In the foreground, a dog sniffs the ground near a roasting spit over a fire. The background shows people cutting meat, implying a lively banquet atmosphere.
