The Quill Project is recruiting three Research Assistants to support Writing Peace, an exciting digital humanities initiative exploring the negotiations that led to the 1998 Good Friday Agreement. Based at Pembroke College, Oxford, the project brings together researchers, archivists, and librarians across Ireland, Northern Ireland, and Britain.

We are seeking one student from each of three partner institutions—the University of Oxford, Queen’s University Belfast, and University College Dublin—to work as a collaborative cohort while embedded in their home institution.

The posts will run from November 2026 to July 2027 and offer 200 hours of paid work at £15 per hour, plus holiday pay. Working arrangements will combine remote and in-person activities and will be scheduled around study commitments.

Duties may include cataloguing, metadata creation, transcription checking, historical research, editing and proofreading, digitisation work, and assistance with project events and outreach activities. Training and support will be provided throughout the project.

We are looking for motivated students with excellent attention to detail, strong communication skills, and an interest in historical research. This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on research experience, develop transferable professional skills, and to work with an interdisciplinary, cross-border team.

#OTD 1922 the Record Treasury within the Four Courts was destroyed. Ernie O’Malley, garrisoned inside, later wrote in The Singing Flame: 'The yard was littered with chunks of masonry and smouldering records; pieces of white paper were gyrating in the upper air like seagulls.'

The Age of Christ, 592.
Colum Cille, son of Feidhlimidh, apostle of Alba Scotland, head of the piety of the most part of Ireland and Alba, next after Patrick, died in his own church in Hy, in Alba, after the thirty fifth year of his pilgrimage, on Sunday night precisely, the 9th day of June. Seventy seven years was his whole age when he resigned his spirit to heaven, as is said in this quatrain:

Three years without light
was Colum in his Duibh-regles;
He went to the angels from his body,
after seven years and seventy.
Dallan Forgaill composed this on the death of Colum Cille:
