in a blur of new responsibilities,
keeping family together
with sky-high mortgage rates
and only one income.

Head down, nose to the grindstone,
I missed the advent of coffee shops
and the internet, the rise of cheap flights.

The only thing that anchored me there
was the music.
Not the boy bands and girl bands,
Madchester and Indie rock,
a dose of Brit-Pop.

That first Iraq war
terrified and outraged me
in equal measure
New Labour
bowing
to US Pressure.

New world,
old problems.

The 90’s passed me by.
My world was growing smaller
as my husband’s rage grew larger,
crushed by control.
