“My recipe for life is not being afraid of myself, afraid of what I think or of my opinions.”—Eartha Kitt For #WomensHistoryMonth, we celebrate Eartha Kitt, an international star, dancer, singer, actress, performer, cabaret artist, and published author.

A black-and-white square photograph. Eartha Kitt is center of frame with a fluffy dark colored puppy on her left shoulder. The dog looks directly into the camera with big puppy eyes. Eartha holds up both hands up to cradle the dog on her chest. She wears a light colored elbow length shirt. She is looking down and to the left towards the dog; her eyeliner and lipstick-lined mouth, slightly parted to show teeth, are visible. Her hair is worn short and styled neatly with volume.

A black-and-white photograph of Eartha Kitt sitting on a diving board above a pool. She holds a copy of the book “Pagan Spain” by Richard Wright. On the board below her is a keychain with a single key. She wears a solid colored long sleeve shirt and short swim bottoms with her legs and feet showing.

From a poetry collection by Mary Oliver, where after a hundred poems showcasing gentle observations on nature and animals, she hits you with this

OF THE EMPIRE
We will be known as a culture that feared death and adored power, that tried to vanquish insecurity for the few and cared little for the penury of the many. We will be known as a culture that taught and rewarded the amassing of things, that spoke little if at all about the quality of life for people (other people), for dogs, for rivers. All the world, in our eyes, they will say, was a commodity. And they will say that this structure was held together politically, which it was, and they will say also that our politics was no more than an apparatus to accommodate the feelings of the heart, and that the heart, in those days, was small, and hard, and full of meanness.

sorry to report that "Idle Talk from the Bean Arbor" (豆棚閒話), an obscure collection from the 1660s that I've spent too much time with, is relevant again -- here, have a description of the last years of the Ming

The narrator - here, an old man, probably an authorial alter ego - speaks to an audience of young whippersnappers who don't remember what the last years of the Ming were like:

If I told you how it was back then, it'd scare you to death. There was the Fall of Liaodong in the Wanli Emperor's 48th year, and then the Taichang Emperor, who died before his first month was out and passed the throne to the Tianqi Emperor, who was only a silly child still and knew nothing of the world. The Emperor left the business of raising troops and securing supplies to the eunuch Wei Zhongxian, who was busy draining the state treasury dry. The fighting was still north of Shan-Hai Pass then, and the heartland was still at peace.
The Chongzhen Emperor didn't have his older brother's luck. Awaiting him were droughts that stretched on for years, or uncontrollable floods, and when it wasn't plagues of disease it was plagues of locusts. On top of that, he had a stingy nature. The fresh-minted ignoramuses running the provincial government offices, who cared more about pleasing their superiors than doing their jobs, submitted an edict cutting funding and supplies for all the courier stations throughout the empire. This also ended a useful employment for the rascals of the empire -- who, finding it difficult to keep themselves clothed and fed, promptly set about forming gangs and turning bandit.

Listen I need y’all to know that this is not the level of nail art you can expect from me as an everyday thing. I fucking outdid myself here, okay? This was a birthday tribute for a friend who really likes Magritte. Yes it’s all hand painted with nail polish. Yes it took forever.

Close up of my thumbnail with a recreation of Magritte’s The Son Of Man (just the section from the chest up). That’s the famous painting of the dude in a suit and bowler hat facing the camera, but a green apple hovers directly in front of his face, completely obscuring it. The original was painted in 1946.

Photo showing all the nails on the painted hand. Each nail shows a different painting, except the ring and pinkie which are two halves of one painting.

A close up of the 4 finger nails. On the index is Magritte’s The False Mirror. This one is huge eye staring out at the viewer, but the iris is a blue sky with fluffy white clouds.

On the middle nail is the pipe (without the words) from The Treachery of Images (the famous painting of a pipe that has “this is not a pipe” written under it in French).

The ring and pinkie finger nails are two halves of Decalcomania, a painting in which a suited man stands facing away from the viewer stands beside a red curtain. The curtain has a cut-out in the shape of the man (bowler hat and all), through which can be seen a blue sky with fluffy white clouds. In the full painting you can see that the man is standing on a beach facing the water, but my recreation is only the head and shoulders of the man (on the ring finger) and the equivalent silhouette in the curtain (on the pinkie).
