Armenia threatens to leave CSTO and EAEU over potential Russian gas price hike
Armenia is considering pulling out of the Russian-led CSTO military bloc and Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) if the price of Russian gas rises, Parliamentary Speaker Alen Simonyan said, as reported by NEWS.am .
According to Simonyan, gas tariffs remain a key sticking point between Yerevan and Moscow, with negotiations yet to produce a full agreement. If the two countries fail to strike a deal and Armenia faces higher prices, he suggested this could become a trigger for leaving both the CSTO and EAEU.
Simonyan noted that any final decision will depend on developments, but emphasized that Armenia is prepared to act in its national interests.
He added that he remains optimistic about the outcome, pointing to what he called a constructive dialogue between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Russian President Vladimir Putin after recent talks.
Previously, Putin directly warned Pashinyan about the consequences during their face-to-face meeting.
Subsequently, Pashinyan reportedly arrived in Moscow delivering bad news for Russia, according to other reports.
