The attorneys general might be fine with censorship when they’re the ones doing it, but what happens when successors with opposing political views inherit enforcement powers?

“And with respect to CBS, the editorial board makes even less sense. Ellison already traded away CBS’ editorial independence in his negotiations with Federal Communications Commission Chair and Trump loyalist Brendan Carr, hiring a career partisan as a “bias ombudsman” and committing in regulatory submissions to truthful and unbiased reporting — practically the same words Bonta uttered at his shameful press conference. To Carr, of course, that means reporting that is uncritical of the administration.

“Carr has said that he’d attempt to punish failure to abide by those terms, as he interprets them, as false statements to a federal agency. Bonta says his agreement is enforceable in court. So who will decide whether the news is fair, true, and unbiased? Will it be Carr, the bias ombudsman, the attorneys general, or the editorial board?

“Ultimately, the answer is Ellison, and by extension his buddy Donald Trump.”

This is APPALLING. The Trump administration is detaining multiple random Somali immigrants with no criminal record at Guantanamo Bay, seemingly because the White House ordered ICE specifically to detain Somalis at Gitmo as part of its effort to punish an ethnic group Trump has attacked.

According to Mohamed, guards at Guantanamo have said they are being held there because that's what officials in Washington, DC, want. "There's no other nation, only Somali people in Guantanamo Bay, in the prison," he told me. "And when we ask them why we are here, they tell us... Washington...ordered to keep Somali people in the Guantanamo Bay."

I have NEVER, in more than a decade in this field, heard of the Board of Immigration Appeals deciding a complex case like this in 24 hours. And neither has Charles Adkins-Blanch, who served on the Board for two decades, and knows its processes inside and out. This whole thing STINKS to high heaven.

Immigration judges work for the Justice Department, not the independent judicial branch, meaning they can be hired and fired by administration officials. By law they are required to decide cases using their “independent judgment and discretion.”
Former appellate immigration judges said that even if the Serrano case had been fast-tracked, a complex appeal like his would normally have taken weeks to decide, not a single day.
“I can’t recall a case ever moving that quickly,” said Charles Adkins-Blanch, who was appointed to the immigration appeals board under President George W. Bush and later served as its vice chairman. “It’s highly unusual.”

The timing is damning. Less than 24 hours after the briefing was submitted in his appeal to the Board of Immigration Appeals, the Board overturned Mr. Serrano's torture protections, despite extensive evidence. Five hours later, he was on a deportation flight, with the Ecuadorean media tipped off.

Then, at 4:06 p.m. on Aug. 27, the Homeland Security Department filed its written argument to the immigration appeals board, court records show.
At 3:12 p.m. the next day, a panel of three appellate immigration judges unanimously reversed the lower court, saying they did not find it likely that Mr. Serrano would be tortured in Ecuador.
The judges said that the physical harm suffered by Mr. Glas did not qualify as torture because it had not been shown to have been “intentionally inflicted with the specific intent to inflict severe pain or suffering.” They also noted that the Ecuadorean government had not been proven responsible for the deaths of the other suspects in Mr. Villavicencio’s assassination.
The judge who wrote the opinion, Keith Hunsucker, has close ties to the Trump administration. For several months, he served as the acting chief judge for the immigration court system.
Mr. Hunsucker did not respond to a request for comment.
Within five hours of the appeals board ruling, court records show, Mr. Serrano was on a plane back to Ecuador, where his arrival was broadcast online. Mr. Noboa said that Mr. Serrano was being held in El Encuentro, a prison modeled after El Salvador’s notorious CECOT detention center.

Underneath is a picture of a metal cage that is 4 feet 3 inches wide by 4 feet 3 inches long, and 7 feet 9 inches high. The cage itself is placed on a tiny spot of fake turf, and then surrounded by another chainlink fence with razor wire on top. The cage is covered by a roof, but it's entirely exposed to the outside otherwise, meaning mosquitos and no air conditioning.
