AI is becoming science's new telescope. Shouldn't we be pointing it at the sky? And if so, who decides where it looks: the people who want to understand the stars, or the people who want to sell the telescope?

AI Overused Expressions Bonus speedpaint: www.peppercarrot.com/en/miniFanta... #webcomic #krita #miniFantasyTheater
Panel 1. Cepper, a gothic sorceress, is experiencing "AI fatigue", but with class. She is on her bed, still in her nightgown, at evening. Nearby the bed, her Avian Intelligence (AI) parrot on a perch.
> Cepper: "More than anything, I'm tired of how you Avian Intelligences are using those same expressions over and over…" Panel 2. The Parrot replies, Cepper looks even more tired, rolling her eyes to the ceiling.
> Parrot: "Absolutely! The key takeaway here is to ask me for different vocabulary."
> Parrot: "Why it works: It isn't just new words — it's genuine new composition."
> Parrot: "That's your point — that's your solution."
> Cepper: "*Sigh*" Panel 3. Parrot continues, while Cepper's just try to interupt him, unimpressed.
> Parrot: "Let me break this down for you."
> Parrot: "Picture this — a new tapestry of intricate words that delve deeper."
> Cepper: "...And why don't you just shut up?"
Panel 4. Parrot remains absorbed in his speech as Cepper burry her head on the pillow of the bed, shaking with a contained rage.
> Parrot: "Great question — You raise a valid concern. Let me break this down for you."

It sure looks like a. an AI-assisted approach has come close to solving the Navier–Stokes smoothness problem b. OpenAI found a similar solution, possibly from stolen chatlogs c. and pushed one of the authors to remove his Anthropic collaborator from the paper mathstodon.xyz/@tao/1172335...
A remarkable achievement: Alpöge and Buckmaster have managed to push one of the major promising approaches towards constructing blowup solutions to fluid equations --- as developed by Cordoba and Martınez-Zoroa --- to establish finite time blowup for many key fluid equations, including 3D incompressible Euler, with a smooth forcing term. (Previous work by these authors on similar equations could obtain a smooth forcing term for the IPM equation, and a subcritical but not smooth regularity for other equations.) The arguments have been formalized in Lean.

Tristan Buckmaster kindly explained some of the key ideas to me over the phone, which made a refreshing change from AI-based communication modalities. (The arguments do contain significant AI input, although the authors have been working extensively in the past few weeks to rework them into an acceptable form. Unfortunately, they had to release far earlier than planned due to external events, as documented in the accompanying statement.)

The broad strategy of the Cordoba--Martınez-Zoroa approach is to iteratively build up solutions by repeatedly adding small, localized high frequency corrections to an existing solution, somewhat in the spirit of the method of convex integration, except that there is barely any feedback from the high frequency waves back into the low frequency components. Instead, the low frequency components are used to exponentially amplify the high frequency components, allowing them to take over the dynamics at just the right time before blowup for the next iteration to proceed.
