I legitimately don't understand the point of Jubilee's "Surrounded" videos. The GenZ/Boomer thing is _painful_ to watch. Like what always happens, it immediately turns hard away from the actual topic and just devolves into typical right/left wing grievance politics. No depth whatsoever.

This is _really_ cool. Really emphasizes the technical sophistication of @noaa.gov; we're no longer in the days where the GFS was hard-coded to run on one HPC system on a super specific schedule. This complexity rivals - if not exceeds - what many private weather companies are doing.

Dear Friends and Colleagues,
The news of layoffs at NOAA and other federal agencies has been tough to hear, and I know many of us here in CliMAS are feeling the weight of it. NOAA’s work is at the heart of what we do as meteorologists and climate scientists, and it’s hard to see talented, dedicated people facing uncertainty. Earth scientists are some of the most dedicated people to their profession you’ll find. Many have dreamed of their careers since they were young, like me, and now those dreams and aspirations have been jarred.
I know this is a difficult time, but the weather and climate enterprise is close-knit, strong and supportive. Whether in government, private industry, or academia, we are all connected, and we stand with you. If you need advice, networking opportunities, or just someone to talk to, please don’t hesitate to reach out us.
For those in a position to help, let’s do what we can to support our colleagues, whether it be sharing job leads, offering recommendations, or simply reminding them that their work matters.
To everyone at NOAA, past and present, thank you for everything you’ve done. Your work has made a real difference—saving lives, advancing science, and helping people understand the world around them. I have written a short statement responding to mass firings today of #NOAA / National Weather Service (#NWS) staff (which were concentrated among recent hires as well as highly experienced staff who had recently been promoted). Please see below screenshot & below for full text.

Statement begins:
The mass firing of both new hires and recently promoted senior staff within NOAA, including mission-critical and life-saving roles at the National Weather Service (NWS), is profoundly alarming. It appears that NOAA staff fired today include meteorologists, data and computer scientists responsible for maintaining and upgrading weather predictive models, and technicians responsible for maintaining the nation’s weather instrumentation network (among many others).

Housed within NOAA, the U.S. NWS is a truly world-class meteorological predictive service, perhaps singularly so. Its cost of operation is only ~$3-4/yr per taxpayer—equivalent to a single cup of coffee—and yields a truly remarkable return on investment (at least 10 to 1, and perhaps 100 to 1, depending on methods of estimation). NOAA and the NWS collectively offer tens to hundreds of billions of dollars each year in net economic benefit through a combination of averted losses and efficiencies gained....

It's hard to overstate how dramatically pixi.sh and github.com/astral-sh/uv improve Python environment management. I've nearly entirely eliminated conda/mamba from my toolkit - and on the rare occasion I need one, I can trivially generate an environment from pixi.

I have a functional sketch of pyrcel (pyrcel.readthedocs.io/en/stable/) re-written in JAX/diffrax. You can do all sorts of cool things with such an end-to-end differentiable adiabatic cloud parcel model. So I should pull an all-nighter and re-write the model core for a v1.4 or v2.0 release, right?

My favorite part about paying doctors' bills is seeing how when they screw up the insurance claim, they charge me personally between 4x-10x what they ultimately charge the insurer once it's fixed. And no, it shouldn't cost $300 for 10 mins to tell me my COVID test was (-) so I just have a cold.
