Your tech debt is now a market opportunity; For someone else. AI agents will rewrite your codebase in a modern language and it'll all go away. Impressive pitch. Don't buy it.

When @mrjamesob.bsky.social refers to the cladding scandal as being in the past, as he did today, he harms the thousands of leaseholders like my family and I, still locked in an unsellable home 8 years later. It isn't solved. Despite all the promises made to us by @matthewpennycookmp.bsky.social

I've started a new role and writing Golang for the first time in my career. I don't get it. Maybe it's because I've gotten used to the rich type systems of Rust and Kotlin, but Go feels like I'm back to basic OO again. What am I missing?

I walk in on my wife and 10 month old having a dance party without me, to the tunes of Lady Gaga. My wife: "this was *his* choice, BTW" " And how did he express this choice, exactly?" I enquired. She looks me dead in the eyes: "he said ga ga". Fair.

I would guess aprox 95% of the tests that candidates have submitted to our take home exercise have been generated by LLMs. The telltale signs are pretty obvious. Its pointless to test that your implementation does what it does. You should be testing that implements the business logic.

When people tell you who they are - believe them. Reform are climate change deniers and they are a real threat to our future existence. If you know anyone who is considering voting for them, make it your personal project to help them understand what they are voting for.

I never appreciate how hard it is to bridge the gaps between Data Science, ML and Engineering. You often have folks from these three backgrounds fully aligned on the outcome, but wholly misaligned on the path there, and as a result - stalemate.

If you're having a discussion with someone, don't send your LLM bot into their mentions to argue in agreement with you. It reeks of bad faith, and earns an immediate block by me. Maybe it's just me, but this is not the kind of interaction I'm interested in having on here.

Most people think the cladding crisis is over. It's not. 6 years after Grenfell, we're still trapped in flammable buildings, paying the price while freeholders profit. This is what it actually costs to live in the "post-Grenfell" world: 🧵

I find this all so weird. Basically, what he's saying, is that programming is a skill and that if you have that skill you can utilise code generation tools, like LLMs, effectively. In other words, vibe coding isnt a thing. I won't go as far as to say its a grift, but it doesn't feel far off to me.

One thing I'll always appreciate about Rust: I can come back to a project two years later and it still compiles flawlessly. Meanwhile, return to a Node project after six months? Some random transitive dependency is broken. Python project? Good luck taking PTO.

I thought I understood lean thinking until I had to lead data scientists as well. Now, a couple of years working on nature, I get it—it works for science too. Turns out 'what's the minimum viable step?' and 'what's the minimum viable confidence level?' are the same question in different languages.

Sad that it has taken the hype of llm coding agents to incentive some folks to prioritise the same things that they could do compassion for their fellow human team-mates. Small steps, small codebases, fast tests, automation, clear code & docs; all help the bots as well as the team.

Our new paper shows that soil cation exchange can delay CO₂ removal from enhanced weathering by years to decades. Lag varies by soil, climate, and land use—longest in high-CEC regions like the Corn Belt. Big implications for MRV, credit timing, and deployment strategy. Timing matters! 🪨🌾 Link below.

I find the bsky community's scatter gun approach to block lists very odd. If this person thinks *I'm* a proponent of LLMs then they really need to work on their reading comprehension. I mean, I don't mind people blocking me, but I'd never trust this person to curate my feed. 🤷
Screenshot of a bsky list called "AI Hype Guzzlers and Glazers" and it's description "Fools who have swallowed the techbro hype and regurgitate it. These accounts worship “AI” and/or think bullshit generating LLMs are “good actually”. If you’re a programmer who claims it writes good code, I am going to assume you’re incompetent and bad at your job."

This is absolutely ridiculous on multiple dimensions. First of all, why would you base your thesis on the claims of people with such an obvious conflict of interest? Do some journalism for God's sake. Second, unless you're a tiny startup, cutting the lower rung of Engineering makes no sense.

We're beginning to see this is engineering too. So far, anecdotally, it's contractors who begin a contract to find they are asked to clean up the AI slop left by junior engineers. If I were still a contractor I'd seriously consider an AI-slop break clause that lets me end the contract early. 😅

I've had three recruiter emails in the past 24h, clawing for my attention by talking about the dark side of remote hiring, clearly inspired by @gergely.pragmaticengineer.com's latest. I can't help wonder if they feed the latest headlines into LLMs so they have fresh content to spam me. Blocked.

This is spot on. That said, LLMs *are* a step change in productivity, especially if your engineering rigour is up to scratch. This is why you shouldn't fear being replaced by an LLM, but rather by another engineer who uses LLMs effectively.

Found a baby songbird? Here's a newly updated chart!
A chart that explains what to do If You Find A Baby Songbird Out Of The Nest. Is it hurt or did a cat get it? (Cat bites & scratches cause deadly infections.) or, Has a person kept it for over a day, given it food or water, or gotten it wet? If yes, Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator
or wildlife care center near you. An online search can help. If no, what does it look like? Eyes not yet open. You have a hatchling. It's very young. Eyes open; feathers few & may be in tube-like sheaths. You have a nestling. Feathered; awkwardly hops or flutters; tail & wings short. You have a fledgling. Many sharp teeth; large claw on second toe. You have a velociraptor. If a hatchling or nestling, can you see the nest? If yes, Return it to its nest. The parents won’t care if they can smell you. If no, Make a nest from a basket & dried grass. Wire it to a tree. (Note: A few species, like Juncos, need a nest on the ground.) If a fledgling, is it in immediate danger? If yes, carefully move it to a safer spot nearby. If no, DO NOT INTERVENE! Though the bird looks awkward, it’s in a natural stage & the parents are still feeding it. If a velociraptor, has it seen you? If yes, back away slowly. Do not show fear. If no, run. Watch for others that may attack from the sides. FYI: Some babies (eg. swifts, most woodpeckers) only sit on the ground if in trouble. When in doubt, keep watch & contact a wildlife rehabilitator if needed!

Scientists who study climate don't automatically attribute all changes to human activity. Rather, we carefully investigate every possible natural factor that could explain the planet's warming. Could these be the real culprits? The evidence is in--and the answer is NO. This thread explains! 🧵
A graphic with an icon of the sun, a wiggly line denoting natural cycles, and a volcano, with a title reading "WHY is climate changing?" created by me. Not fancy, as my graphic design skills lean to function over art!
