Really cool (and somewhat freighting) work on Gen AI use and highschool performance in China. Homework Scores rocket up, time spend doing homework collapses, then predictably exam scores are way down. Results show bimodal response ~75% see scores drop, the other 20-25% keep doing the work.

I despair of the media framing on this. Surely the question is this: Two parties you may need to govern have proposed tax resets that leave most kiwis paying less tax provided the wealthiest pay their fair share. Why would you oppose that if yout goal is to help hard working kiwi families? #nzpol

If my student already uses the grid/area to multiply or factorise, I’ll use this. I do like that the product of the diagonals is always the same. That’s fun.

It really doesn’t. Plato had a great answer to this problem more than two millennia ago. In the Theaetetus, he describes memory not as a storehouse or filing cabinet, but as a birdcage. Imagine, he says, that each of us has a cage in our minds filled with birds. 1/

I keep coming back to this. Just such a fundamental failure of everything that has been claimed about a "knowledge rich" curriculum. Teachers are demanded to have higher standards but this slop is what they put out as their big rewrite.

In #MathsToday we played this. A sneaky way to squeeze in some revision on multiples and lots of fun.
A grid from 1 to 36.

Each player starts with 10 counters.

Players take turns to roll a dice and place a counter
on a multiple of that number if possible.
The first player to use up all their counters wins!

Last week our year 13s started their conic sections standard by looking at loci through the medium of Skittles. Sadly, some Skittles did not make it out of the lesson. Thanks to Chris Collins for originally introducing me to this #NZ #maths #conics #Skittles
Skittles representing the following loci: point equidistant from two given points, point at a fixed distance from one given point, point equidistant from two give lines, point a fixed distance from a given line segment.

(0/13) A 🧵 about helping children you care about to learn maths. And you don't even have to be a mathematician, or even "good" at #maths, to do it. You just have to model resilience and positivity towards what they're doing, and to avoid reinforcing negative tropes. Here's how:
