To celebrate the @femmediahist.bsky.social "Women of IMAX" issue, scholars Janine Marchessault, Jessica Mulvogue, Allison Whitney + artist Oliver Husain are leading a virtual panel discussion with Canadian astronaut Roberta Bondar on October 24. I'm excited to listen in! rmg.on.ca/events/imax-...
Two-page spread from "Women of IMAX" zine. Profile of Roberta Bondar with two photographs.

Roberta Bondar is a physician, neuroscientist, photographer, and Canada’s first woman astronaut. Having been selected for the inaugural cohort of the Canadian Astronaut Program in 1983, she would travel to space as a payload specialist on the Space Shuttle Discovery mission STS-42, where she participated in the production of the IMAX film Destiny in Space (1994) co-directed by Ben Burtt, Phyllis Ferguson, James Neihouse, and Gail Singer.

On this mission she conducted a series of experiments in the International Microgravity Laboratory, many of which are documented in Destiny in Space. Bondar has described her experiences on STS-42, and specifically with IMAX, as key motivators in her ongoing work as a photographer, including her “Space for Birds” project, which incorpo-rates photography of birds and their habitats from surface, aerial, and space perspectives in order to better understand and protect migration routes. IMAX Panel Discussion with Canadian Astronaut Roberta Bondar
Oct 24, 2026, 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Join us for a virtual panel discussion on the history and future of IMAX cinema with special guest, astronaut Dr. Roberta Bondar. Dr Bondar will share her experiences with IMAX filmmaking in space, and how it continues to influence her work as a photographer and environmental advocate. Our panel will consist of scholars Janine Marchessault, Jessica Mulvogue, Allison Whitney, and artist Oliver Husain, whose exhibition I <3 Snail, on display at the gallery, draws on similar themes to the panel.

This event will also mark the publication of a special issue of the journal Feminist Media Histories on “Women of IMAX,” which investigates the transformative work of women as film directors, producers, museum managers, technical writers, and computing experts in the medium’s nearly fifty-year history.

This event is free and open to everyone. If there are ways we can support your participation, please contact Hannah at hkeating@rmg.on.ca.

Registration is required.

Saw MUSK by @alexgibneyfilm.bsky.social yesterday, and I can’t recommend it highly enough. It’s not a portrait - it’s specifically about power: how he got it, and how he’s been able to maintain it. And it’s riveting.

Had the pleasure of collaborating w/ Allison Whitney, Jessica Mulvogue, and other contributors to the new @femmediahist.bsky.social special issue on "Women of IMAX" to create a zine of 11 career profiles based on their research. Can't wait to get physical copies! online.ucpress.edu/fmh/article/...

WOMEN OF IMAX title in large white lettersBlue and yellow imagery of IMAX schematics overlaid with black tesxt that reads:

Women of IMAX offers a glimpse into the range of women’s engagement with IMAX cinema from its invention to the present day, featuring research contributions from Monika Gagnon, Janine Marchessault, Jessica Mulvogue, Veronica Paredes, and Allison Whitney. We were inspired by the creativity and insights of Tanya Goldman’s Women of the 16mm Sector zine series, and were thrilled when she and designer John Munshour agreed to work with us on this project.

Sources for this research include archival materials from Library and Archives Canada, Media Commons at the University of Toronto Libraries, Centro Cultural Tijuana, Science Museum of Minnesota, McGill University Archives, and Ingenium – Canada Science and Technology Museum, and interviews with Roberta Bondar, Diane Carlson, Donna Cox, Mary Jane Dodge, Munro Ferguson, Ingrid Lae, and Cherie Rivers. We have also accessed recorded interviews and oral histories with Althea Douglas, Phyllis and Graeme Ferguson, and Toni Myers.

This project is supported by an Insight Grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.

Fusako Shuzui (aka Fusako Morisue, born 1928) is the Senior Editor of the first IMAX film, Tiger Child (1970), presented at Expo ‘70 in Osaka, Japan. Shuzui is credited as editor of numerous Japanese films between 1955-1991, yet it is difficult to locate biographical information about her, or even a photo caption confirming her likeness. She is the woman in profile on the far right of this photograph, taken during the editing of Tiger Child with (from right to left) Yoko Fujisaki, an unidentified assistant editor, Umeko Numasaki, and producer Roman Kroitor. Other assistant editors credited on the film were Haruko Takahashi, Takako Hanamura, and Kazuko Takagi.

While she remains relatively invisible, she had a hand in editing many significant works of Japanese cinema, including the internationally acclaimed Woman of the Dunes (1964), one of seven films she edited made by Japanese New Wave director Hiroshi Teshigahara. She also edited two documentaries directed by Fumio Kamei: It Is Good to Live (1956), an early work about the impact of the atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and The World is Terrified: The Reality of the ‘Ash of Death’ (1957), on nuclear testing in the Pacific.

Phyllis Ferguson (née Wilson) (1950- 2021) was born in Quetico, Ontario, a status member of the Algonquins of Pikwàkanagàn First Nation. At 12, she was sent to live with her grandmother, Phyllis Tenniscoe, in Thun-der Bay, where she studied audio-visual broadcasting at Confederation College’s new radio and television program. In 1970, she was hired to assist the location manager of North of Superior, one of the first films shot in IMAX. She then hosted the National Film Board of Canada’s weekly “Challenge for Change” television slot, worked as a CBC radio announcer in Whitehorse, and contributed to an Indigenous community newspaper in Ottawa.
In 1974, she worked as a sound recordist on the IMAX-produced Man Belongs to the Earth (screened at the U.S. Pavillion of Expo ‘74), later returning to tele-vision as a location manager for the Canadian Broad-casting Corporation’s The Fifth Estate and CTV’s W5. Returning to Thunder Bay, she directed her 1977 docu-mentary Nishnawbe-Aski: The People and the Land, a pro bono film addressing the impact of development on Cree and Ojibwa communities and opposing clear-cut-ting. She married her creative partner Graeme Ferguson in 1982, the same year they produced Hail Columbia! which initiated a series of IMAX space films. Among them, she co-produced The Dream is Alive (1985), Blue Planet (1990), Mission to MIR (1997), and co-produced and co-directed Destiny in Space (1994).

My favorite genre is "Code-era smut" because they put the dirtiest things in these movies (like Gary Cooper insinuating he's too down bad to be gentle with Barbara Stanwyck) but they make it sweet by pretending the film is just a cute lil Damon Runyon meets Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs fairy tale
