The profit-prestige connection in academic publication & assessment must be shattered.
Saray Córdoba, a retired information scientist at the University of Costa Rica in San José, suspects that some journals might have shifted away from the model "not because diamond open access is financially unsustainable", but because they think that the more commercial models "will bring them more prestige."

The provost of UMass (R1) literally told a group of historians this: “research” means pulling in large external grants and unless you do that, you don’t matter and get nothing internally. “Research“ is about $ and institutions support only those disciplines that bring in $ or raise it privately.

This makes me want to return to my volcano project from a few years ago, which was (is?) much more broadly about gender and volcanic imagery on screen. fwiw I really didn't like Herzog's Into the Inferno (2016), an earlier work than his Krafft doc mentioned here, which I haven't yet seen.

We keep discussing ”strategies” for teaching in the age of AI to avoid talking about resources. It’s so boring!! The strategy is invest $ to hire people, lower class size, support research-engaged learning & stop measuring the worth of disciplines in relation to # of enrollments and majors.

There was a Netflix doc series w/ an episode about Britpop that framed that whole era as Oasis vs. Blur. But one of the final shots showed a line of fans standing outside one of their concerts in front of a giant billboard advertising The Verve. Clearly the real winner was there all along.

I think what I find really depressing about AI in higher education is how so many people didn't even wait for the evidence/research before we decided on telling students "how to use AI responsibly" which often includes things like checking grammar, and obviously, we shouldn't have been

Did you know that even prompting an LLM to edit your grammar might alter the semantic meaning of your text and remove your human voice? If you're in Bergen on Friday September 4 you can hear Isadora White and Marwa Abdulhai present their recent paper on this. They took human-written short essays, asked LLMs to revise them and found significant changes well beyond just copyediting. This is a large-scale computational study, but the image shared here shows two examples of how this happens.

We'll also have talks by John Gallagher, whose newsletter on AI and writing I read religiously, and by Rashid Mustafin, a PhD student at NHH, and Pedro Jacobetty. And before these public talks the AI STORIES team gets to spend two days in a workshop with these and other brilliant people - I'm so excited!
