After a year (already?!) at @politikuhh.bsky.social I'll give my Antrittsvorlesung 21/10🎉 I'm shy about my current research as I had a baby just weeks after joining UHH and the year has been exhausting with both start-up- & new-parent-tasks. But, that's just all the more reason to celebrate! 1/

New paper out in the @thejop.bsky.social (w/ @christinagahn.bsky.social) Do opinion polls shape election results? Using both cross-national data and a survey experiment, the answer we find is yes - though it depends on how we communicate polling results. www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/10.1086/...
Image showing the abstract of the paper "Self-Fulfilling Prophecies at the Voting Booth" by Werner Krause and Christina Gahn, published in the Journal of Politics. The abstract describes a quasi-experimental study across 25 countries finding that parties polling just below electoral thresholds are approximately 45 percentage points less likely to clear them, and that this effect diminishes when voters are informed about polling uncertainty.

Today in four weeks, Switzerland will vote on a far-right SVP initiative that demands a cap on the Swiss population of 10 million. What is often misunderstood is that the initiative does not necessarily demand an end to immigration, but — even worse — the complete disenfranchisement of immigrants.
