"On a per capita basis, Ireland is subsidising fossil fuels at a rate up to 5 times the EU average." "The total fossil fuel subsidy figure for 2026 may well now be more than €6 billion." Compare: the new Children’s Hospital cost €2.24 billion & the total Education Budget for 2026 is €13.5 billion.

On the specific point of a replacement flag, New Zealand recently addressed the task really well IMO. They had a public competition seeking suggestions for a new flag, a public vote to find the most popular, and then put that head to head against the original flag. The original won, but still.

but neither could double dip into the vegemite without leaving butter residue inside the vegemite jar. Not happening. Not on my watch. So a third clean knife was needed to add more vegemite. Job done. The second round of toast (brace of slices) went according to plan, bringing in knives four & five.

Ger @ger.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
Now if you've been paying attention, the first knife has butter residue while the second has both butter and vegemite residue. In this instance I had been stingy with my vegemite dip, so needed to go again. The first knife could conceivably take a second dip into the butter,

Ger @ger.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
Well I'm glad you asked. The standard approach to a round of vegimite on toast is two slices of toast and two knives. The first goes in clean to the butter, spreads it on both slices. The second goes in clean to the vegemite, spreads it, blending in with the vegemite.

I love this for us.
“It's no wonder that the name we called ourselves in our own language was 'Gaels and that the language was an Ghaeilge. Gael means 'forest person' or 'wild man'. It derives from the Old Irish goidel ('wild man' or warrior'), from the Proto-Celtic root weidelos ('savage' or woodsman'), which in turn is connected to weyd ('wilderness'). Initially, this may have been a derogatory term used by others about us, but we adopted it wholeheartedly. Its meaning suggests that we regarded ourselves primarily as people of the unenclosed wilderness rather than as settled farmers.”

One possible charitable explanation for the terrible round tables is that some people (Ian, Pete, Anna?) know fine well that Pauric and Carla are the traitors, but want to keep them where they can see them. Keep voting out faithful and then bang bang at the end and split the pot. #TraitorsIRL

Britain’s original plan for New Zealand had the islands split into three provinces, with nonsensical borders typical of any British colonial project. The provinces were named after Irish ones (the guy who came up with them was an Anglo-Irish colonial officer). These didn’t last for long.
A map of New Zealand, showing its provincial divisions in 1841. Most of the North Island forms ‘New Ulster’, but the southern tip of the island forms ‘New Munster along with what today is now known as the Southern Island. The small island below the Southern Island, Rakiura/Stewart Island, makes the third province ‘New Leinster’
