Extremely cool postdoctoral fellowship opportunity with one of the all-time greats in the field, Dr. Eric Miller at the University of Toronto. Help take transportation modelling to the future by giving bicycles the attention they deserve in our quantitative models! #BikeTO #BikeSky #PhDSky
Active Travel Analysis & Planning Using an Advanced Activity/Travel Demand Model System: A Postdoctoral Fellow Opportunity

The University of Toronto Transportation Research Institute (UTTRI, https://uttri.utoronto.ca/) is seeking a postdoctoral fellow (PDF) to play a leading role in a two-year Canadian Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council Alliance-Advantage project. The project involves: developing new models of bicycle route and mode choice; implementing these models in an advanced, operational agent-based microsimulation activity/travel demand forecasting system for the Greater Toronto-Hamilton Area (GTHA); and using this model system to develop effective bicycle policies and infrastructure for improving sustainable and equitable accessibility and mobility within the region. The PDF will work under the supervision of Prof. Eric Miller, cosupervised by Profs. Shoshanna Saxe and Timothy Chan.

The successful candidate must have demonstrated strong experience in discrete choice modelling and, more generally, travel demand modelling. Experience in bicycle modelling and planning is desirable, as is experience with machine learning methods. The candidate must have strong communication and project management skills, and be able to work effectively in a team environment.

The University of Toronto is consistently ranked in the top 20-25 universities in the world. The Toronto metropolitan region is the largest in Canada and has consistently been the fastest growing major North American urban region, providing an excellent “living laboratory” for
studying urban dynamics and policy formation.

Applicants should submit their CV, graduate school transcripts and a one-page (maximum) statement of qualifications and interest in the position by email to Prof. Eric Miller, eric.miller@utoronto.ca. International applications are welcome, but the applicants must have completed their PhD within five years of their appointment date.

Options 1 through 9 show red "X" marks in the "NO" checkboxes:
Items 1 through 4 are grouped with a bracket labeled "TLDR; F*CK IMMIGRANTS".
Item 5 points to "ADD BARRIERS TO VOTING".
Items 6 through 9 are grouped with a bracket labeled "F*CK THE CANADIAN CONSTITUTION".
Item 10 has a green checkmark in the "YES" box and points to "STAY IN CANADA".
Below the ballot graphic, text reads: "Read. the. Questions. Understand the underlying intention & implied message behind each. Posing as reasonable, they are shrouded bigotry to divide us, deflect accountability, centralize authority, and direct wealth to corporate/private entities."

Local autonomy is a vital check on centralized political power. The province may have the legal authority to overrule municipalities, but legal power is not a democratic mandate. My initial thoughts on the Province’s recent directive ordering the City to reverse course on our land use bylaw.

"Who cares about an election? No one does." That's what an organizer behind Edmonton's anti-infill push believes. No wonder they pushed the Premier to throw out local democracy. Despite what Jesse Watson thinks, mandates come from elections, not his preferences.

Likely right after the referendum. If separation fails, the TBA kooks will want her gone because she didn’t try hard enough. If the Nine fail too, I’d guess her own party will pin that on her alone.

Went to a concert in downtown Edmonton tonight. Drove there. No traffic. Parked directly outside the front door. Cost $2.62 Transit would have taken 2.5x the time, with 10x the walking and would cost $12. We apply user fees to public options, and subsidize private ones. And we reap what we sow.

Tomorrow the Victoria Urbanism Book Club will discuss my friend Anna Zivarts' insightful book, "When Driving is Not an Option" (https://annazivarts.com)
When Driving Is Not an Option shines a light on the frustrating, dangerous, and sometimes deadly situations involuntary nondrivers face every day and outlines steps to center the voices of nondrivers and make transportation more inclusive. Drawing from both her own experiences as a low-vision, non-driving mom and those of nondrivers across the country, Zivarts amplifies voices rarely heard or acknowledged by the people making decisions about transportation design and funding.

Book: When Driving Is Not an Option by Anna Zivarts
This is an important issue. Research described in Anna's book indicates that about a third of travellers cannot or should not drive. This is also discussed in my report, "Evaluating Transportation Diversity" (http://vtpi.org/choice.pdf). Anna is a terrific advocate for people with disabilities and multimodal planning. She has helped found the Week Without Driving (https://weekwithoutdriving.org) campaign which encourages motorists to reduce or eliminate driving for a week, in order to experience the world from a non-drivers' perspective (October 1-8 this year).
I can report from personal experience being car-free can be a superior lifestyle -- we save money, get daily exercise and avoid stress -- but that is only possible because we live in a very accessible, multimodal neighborhood. Everybody should have that opportunity.
Thanks Anna for your great work!

That sounds like a paradox. Someone named Braess should claim that. This is also why we’ll always have congestion unless other mobility options get really, really, REALLY good. People only change habits when congestion gets beyond their tolerance and now most people are trained to tolerate it.

One minor quibble with this very good report on the mayor's announcement about a Vision Zero reboot. Vision Zero is not about the "three E's" at all. It's largely about designing streets so that mistakes don't lead to death. Education is barely a part of it. nyc.streetsblog.org/2026/09/15/v...
The main pillars of Vision Zero are the so-called “three E’s”: engineering (such as road redesigns), education and enforcement, involving, mostly the NYPD.
