I think we really need what I provocatively would call the #AI-bro versus #luddite meeting in science soon. The viewpoints are diverging, and neither is tenable. There is a need to start looking for common ground for the benefit of science.

In 2022, planetary geologist & NASA astronaut Dr. Jessica Watkins became the first Black woman to serve on a long-duration International Space Station mission. She spent 170 days in orbit executing vital medical, biological, and physical sciences experiments. #WorldSpaceWeek🚀 #WomenInSTEM
An official NASA portait of planetary geologist and history-making NASA astronau,Dr. Jessica Watkins. She smiles warmly in a formal portrait, exuding a focused and joyous mood. Captured from the waist up against a deep blue background, she is framed by the American flag on the left and the NASA logo flag on the right. Dr. Watkins is posed leaning forward slightly, her hands calmly resting on a dark surface in the foreground, showcasing her short, natural hair, gold hoop earrings, and open, vibrant expression. She wears a crisp, royal blue NASA flight suit adorned with official insignia: the iconic round NASA patch on her right chest, a rectangular blue nametag reading "JESSICA WATKINS" with the astronaut symbol on her left chest, and an American flag patch on her upper left arm. This balanced, professional composition honors her historic milestone as the first Black woman to serve on a long-duration International Space Station mission and command an orbital spaceflight.

#OTD in 2020, Emmanuelle Charpentier & Jennifer Doudna won the #Nobel Prize in #Chemistry "for the development of a method for genome editing" (referring to their groundbreaking work on the CRISPR/Cas9 genetic scissors). They were the first all-female team to win a Nobel in science. #WomenInSTEM
A side-by-side composite photo of French microbiologist Emmanuelle Charpentier (born December 11, 1968) on the left and American biochemist Jennifer Doudna (born February 19, 1964) on the right. The pair made history by developing the CRISPR-Cas9 "genetic scissors" technology in 2012, which earned them the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. On the left, Dr. Charpentier stands indoors with her hands casually resting in her jeans pockets, looking directly at the camera with a calm, subtle smile. She wears a dark blue tailored blazer over a dark buttoned shirt. Behind her is a large chalkboard filled with scientific diagrams and hand-written biological terms like "ADN Virus," "RNA," "Cas9," and "Bact." On the right, Dr. Doudna stands outdoors with her arms crossed, smiling warmly. She is wearing a brown structured blazer over a dark V-neck top, paired with dark jeans and a black belt. She is positioned before a large, minimalist silver metal sculpture made of intersecting arches, with a soft-focus background of green trees. The composition blends the rigorous, analytical workspace of the laboratory with an open, organic outdoor environment, evoking a professional, accomplished, and confident mood that emphasizes their revolutionary impact on biotechnology.

NASA astronaut & biochemistry researcher Peggy Whitson holds the US space endurance record. Cumulatively, she spent 695 days in #space--the equivalent of a hypothetical round trip to Mars. First woman NASA Chief Astronaut, 2009. #WomenInSTEM #WorldSpaceDay 🚀
A wide-angle interior photograph of legendary astronaut Dr. Peggy Whitson floating effortlessly in microgravity inside the seven-window Cupola observatory module of the International Space Station. Dr. Whitson is angled diagonally across the frame with one outstretched arm while smiling confidently at the camera. She sports her signature short, blonde pixie haircut and wears a dark blue and black commercial flight jumpsuit adorned with the prominent embroidered logo of Axiom Space alongside a mission patch on her chest. Behind her, the large, panoramic circular and trapezoidal windows frame a breathtaking, brilliantly lit view of planet Earth below, displaying bright blue oceans blanketed by swirling white cloud patterns. The geometric framework of the spacecraft interior, lined with handrails, switches, and wiring, creates a complex border around the vivid windows. The overall mood is triumphant, serene, and awe-inspiring. This image carries profound historical significance, documenting Whitson's groundbreaking transition to commercial spaceflight as a mission commander, continuing to break age and endurance milestones well into her sixties.

#Music teacher, conductor & composer Nadia Boulanger is regarded as the most influential music pedagogue of the 20th century. Shattered glass ceilings by becoming the first woman to conduct the Boston Symphony Orchestra, NY Philharmonic & the Royal Philharmonic Society in London. #MusicSky🧵
A dramatic black-and-white photograph of Nadia Boulanger (September 16, 1887 – October 22, 1979) conducting the orchestra of the Royal Philharmonic Society during a rehearsal at Queen’s Hall in London. The legendary French composer, conductor, and teacher is captured in a powerful, commanding pose from a lower angle. She stands behind a conductor's music stand holding open scores, with both arms raised high against a stark, solid black background. Her face is illuminated by a sharp overhead spotlight, emphasizing her stern, intensely focused expression and clear, round eyeglasses. She wears a simple, long-sleeved dark silk or satin dress with a V-neckline, adorned with a delicate starburst pendant necklace. Her hands are expressive and deliberate: her left index finger points dramatically upward toward the ceiling, while her right hand is held slightly lower, fingers curled mid-gesture. The stark, high-contrast composition isolates her figure, creating a deeply intense, artistic, and reverent mood. This photograph captures an immense moment of historical significance, illustrating the fierce focus of one of the most influential music educators and female conductors of the 20th century.

Agatha Christie (b. #OTD 1890): the most widely published author of all time, outsold only by the Bible & Shakespeare. Her books have sold >1 billion copies in English & another billion across 100+ languages. "And Then There Were None" is the best-selling #mystery novel of all time.#LitSky #BookSky
Fun lack-and-white photograph of an older Dame Agatha Christie seated at a round table in a book-lined room, She wears a dark blazer or jacket, a string of pearls, and has short, neatly styled gray hair. In front of her sits an open typewriter with a sheet of paper inserted, and she holds additional typed pages. Towering dramatically on either side of her are two extremely tall, precarious stacks of hardcover books forming an arch-like frame around her head and upper body, with titles visible including several Agatha Christie novels (such as "The Murder of Roger Ackroyd" and "And Then There Were None"), mystery anthologies, and other volumes. Christie is looking up to the top of book stacks. Behind her, a bookshelf holds neatly arranged large books. The composition humorously emphasizes her prolific output as the world's best-selling mystery writer.

#CivilRights activist Claudette Colvin was born #OTD in 1939. On March 2, 1955, she was arrested for refusing to give up her seat on a bus in segregated Montgomery, AL. She was 1 of 4 plaintiffs in Browder v. Gayle that led to the ruling that Alabama bus segregation laws were unconstitutional.
A black-and-white historical composite image honors civil rights pioneer Claudette Colvin (born September 5, 1939). On the right is a head-and-shoulder portrait of Colvin as a 15-year-old girl. She faces forward with a calm, resilient expression and a slight, dignified smile. She wears thick, dark-rimmed cat-eye glasses, and her short, textured hair is styled in neat waves. Her dark sweater contrasts softly against the plain, light background. On the left side of the composition are archival clippings from a 1955 newspaper article reporting on her arrest. Bold headlines read "Girl, 15, Guilty In Bus Seat Case" and "Negro Girl Found Guilty Of Segregation Violation," detailing her conviction in juvenile court for refusing to give up her seat on a segregated Montgomery, Alabama bus. The stark juxtaposition of her bright, youthful face against the harsh segregationist headlines creates a poignant, solemn mood, underscoring her monumental bravery as a key catalyst for the Montgomery bus boycott.

Microbiologist Elizabeth Hazen (b. #OTD 1885) & chemist Rachel Brown were granted a patent for Nystatin, an anti-fungal med in 1957. In 2016, it was the 217th most prescribed medication in the US w/ >2MM prescriptions. They gave all $13.4MM in royalties to a fund that heavily supported #WomenInSTEM
A black-and-white photograph of microbiologist Elizabeth Hazen (1885–1975) and chemist Rachel Fuller Brown (1898–1980), the pioneering duo who discovered the first safe antifungal antibiotic, nystatin. On the left, Hazen sits attentively in a white lab coat over a dark-colored vest andlight shirt. She is looking directly at Brown. Standing on the right, Brown looks intently at Hazen while gesturing with chemical glassware. She wears a white lab coat over a light blouse, her silver hair styled neatly. The lab table is filled with scientific equipment, including a glass Erlenmeyer flask, a specialized tube setup, and a rack brimming with cotton-plugged test tubes. The mid-century laboratory background features white storage cabinets with glass windows revealing stacked beakers, alongside an outdoor window framing dark foliage. The composition emphasizes their collaboration, casting a focused light on their work to evoke a mood of serious, dedicated discovery and monumental historical significance in STEM.
