I am very excited to share the work of my PhD with @eddaschulz.bsky.social, now on BioRxiv! 🎉 🧵⬇️ (1/9) How does the transcription↔️chromatin crosstalk ensure monoallelic expression?

🧵 Happy to share that the final version of our study is finally out in @natcomms.nature.com today: www.nature.com/articles/s41... What started as an unexpected observation—that SETDB1 depletion accelerates X chromosome silencing—led us to uncover a role for SETDB1 in regulating Xist transcription.

SETDB1 and HUSH modulate Xist RNA levels during establishment of X chromosome inactivation - Nature Communications
Regulation of X chromosome inactivation in mammals requires precise control of the levels of the non-coding RNA Xist. Almeida et al. describe an autoregulatory mechanism in which nascent Xist transcri...

Super interesting paper we discussed at the Journal Club today about the secret behind the bowhead whale living over 200 years! 🐋

Evidence for improved DNA repair in the long-lived bowhead whale
Nature - Analysis of the longest-lived mammal, the bowhead whale, reveals an improved ability to repair DNA breaks, mediated by high levels of cold-inducible RNA-binding protein.

⚠️ Paper alert: Using a novel CRISPR screening approach, we mapped the entire regulatory network controlling Xist—key for X-chromosome inactivation. 👉 We discover how sex and development signals are decoded at a single gene locus. www.nature.com/articles/s41... 👇 Bluetorial

Reporter CRISPR screens decipher cis-regulatory and trans-regulatory principles at the Xist locus - Nature Structural & Molecular Biology
Here Schwämmle et al. develop CRISPR reporter screens to map transcription-factor-regulatory element interactions at the Xist locus, revealing a two-step mechanism integrating developmental and X-dosage signals to initiate X-chromosome inactivation.

They couldn’t silence their stories. So they just killed them. Israel never comes back from this.

While helping out on a cool genomics project recently, I came to realise I’d been taught a pretty big inaccuracy about the events that occur at fertilization. I suspect that almost everyone reading this has the same misapprehension, so let’s do some learning together: 1/

Amazing documentary, and a strong slap in the face. If you eat fish, make sure you know where it comes from.

It is sad that even basic research needs to be defended with utility. For me, basic research is in the same category as art: civilized societies can't do without it, because we all want to know who we are and what our place in the natural world is -- questions that only science can answer.

With International Women's Day coming up before too long, any chance someone is building a gender pay gap bot for Bluesky like the one that used to exist on that other app? 😁 www.bbc.com/news/uk-engl...
If you tweet about IWD I'll retweet your gender pay gap
